I often swim with a monofin, so there’s the whole mermaid fantasy. And yes, I can hold my breath longer than most women in the world. But I grew up a total chicken. I trained to be brave. Fear doesn’t have to be a negative. I take energy from it, harness it.Before a dive, I hide under my hat, put on my Walkman, and do some intense visualization. I watch myself go through every step. I actually see my ears equalize. Once I’m in the water, though, it’s the proverbial devil on the left shoulder, angel on the right. Devil says, “Go back up. You’re already a world champion.” Angel says, “Don’t be a loser.” It’s a matter of accepting limits but making sure you damn well find out where they are.I immediately investigated what went wrong.
