Your Say (06-03-2009) Postcodes would cure double street name headache for posties Last week, we asked readers for suggestions on resolving the problems caused by identical street names in the newly-expanded Ha Noi. We also asked if postcodes were necessary for Ha Noi and other cities and provinces. These are some of the opinions we received. Jan Cervenka, London, UK We don’t have the same problem in my hometown of Ostrava in the Czech Republic. It only has about 330,000 citizens, but not even Prague, with a population of one million, has this problem. Maybe we’re just more creative as far as street names go. I am sure that London has a lot of repetition in street names since it’s such a big city, but thanks to the very structured and organised way of assigning postcodes to different streets it never seems to be a problem. In fact, every four-or-so houses the post code changes, so every street has multiple postcodes, e.g. W6 5GH, W6 5MH, W6 5 TY, etc. Londoners often use just the postcode to give their address; it’s precise enough. If this is used in Ha Noi, it will be much cheaper than changing street names, which is not going to be very popular. They can just simply apply different postcodes. It will make the residents’ life easier.
