With spring in the air and summer fast approaching, you may be entertaining thoughts of getting away to enjoy the great outdoors. If you’re not the type to sit on the beach all day or experience the view from inside a car, a cycling adventure might be just the vacation ticket for you. Even if you’re not a strong cycler, there are options that will satisfy your love of the outdoors and not exhaust your body. We found an easy course with beautiful scenery nestled in the hills of Virginia: the Virginia Creeper Trail. Ride the rails — sort ofrails-to-trails project, a movement that takes defunct railroad lines and turns them into trails for hiking, biking or horseback riding. The last train ran on the Virginia Creeper line in 1977, the same year that floodwaters damaged the tracks and led to its abandonment. The line gets its name from both the native plant that grows along the route and the slow-creeping trains that chugged up the railway through Virginia’s Iron Mountains bearing loads of iron ore, lumber and other goods.
