AXTELL, Neb. — The Mosaic School in Axtell has become the first certified autism center in the state of Nebraska. The school serves more than 30 students in rural Nebraska and is one of the only five learning and tutoring centers with this designation in the country. “We saw the dedication and we saw how much they absolutely care about each student as a person and how much they are going to work for their success,” said a mother of one student attending Mosaic School Stacey VanBoening. Stacey VanBoening said her son Ben started attending Mosaic School back in October 2017. “Ben’s quality of life had gone down quite a bit. He’s autistic and his only way to show his frustration or to communicate became self-harm behaviors, and that turned into destruction as well,” said VanBoening. Around a year and a half later, VanBoening said Ben is a different person. “He’s happy. He’s learning coping mechanisms so that he can handle frustrations. He is able to communicate what he wants and what he needs so he doesn’t have as many instances that cause that frustration,” said VanBoening.
