The UAB football team officially began its Conference USA title defense Wednesday as fall camp opened with less than a month remaining before the season opener against Alabama State at Legion Field. “It is a big time to get back for all of us,” UAB coach Bill Clark said. “It takes a lot of hard work from the players, all the way back to January to get to this day. Everything has been leading up to it — all the training in the summer, the sprints and weightlifting. All that is to get ready for today. It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon. They’re excited. We are excited.” The Blazers enjoyed the most successful season in school history in 2018 but has a tall task in replacing a third of the roster that helped win 19 games the past two years.
