A Tory Brexit minister has refused to confirm that even he has been allowed to read the secret legal text of Boris Johnson’s proposed Brexit deal. In excruciating scenes in the House of Commons James Duddridge was sent out to defend the government’s position – which is that that publishing the text, which has already been sent to the EU, would undermine the chances of getting a deal. But after a couple of…ehm…imprecise answers, some in the chamber had wondered if Mr Duddridge had read the text of the legal proposal himself. Eventually, he was asked outright – and he refused to confirm he’d read it. To groans from the opposition benches he said: “I am not going to get into…people opposite who have been ministers will realise lots of people see documents. “Ministers to do not want to be in the position of saying who has seen what document, what version and when. “I will not comment on who has or has not seen documents or what documents I have or have not seen,” Shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer argued the Prime Minister was “hiding” key details by ruling out publishing the full 44-page document.
