It was the right time to do so, as the team had acquired a record-setting amount of draft capital and had the face of the franchise in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Although he's just 23 years old, Gilgeous-Alexander is already a star in the NBA. When he wants to generate a shot offensively, he's got the ability to score at all three levels. "When he's in that mode, it's hard to stop him. It's damn near impossible to stop him with one defender," said Ty Jerome earlier this season. Over the summer, Gilgeous-Alexander inked a max extension with the Thunder that will keep him under contract in Oklahoma City through the 2026-27 season.
