US tent cities highlight new realities as recession wears on
For years, Joan Burke has had to battle the fact that homelessness, for most Americans, is an invisible scourge. Recently, however, invisibility hasn't exactly been the problem. Ten minutes' walk from where she works, at the homelessness charity Loaves and Fishes, in Sacramento, California, lies an all-too-visible "tent city" - a shanty town, built on wasteground beside railway tracks, that has become one of the most prominent symbols of the recession. Tent cities reminiscent of the "Hoovervilles" of the Great Depression have been springing up in cities across the United States - from Reno in Nevada to Tampa in Florida - as foreclosures and redundancies force middle-class families from their homes. "Where the tent city is now is literally a toxic waste dump, it's unsafe, but these people are very resourceful," Burke said. "Some people are living in squalor, with just a tarp tied to a chainlink fence. But then you'll see someone with several tents: The tent they live in, plus some … [Read more...] about US tent cities highlight new realities as recession wears on

Pope’s aide takes 33 refugees to Rome after ‘shameful’ Lesbos visit
An aide to Pope Francis has urged Catholic churches across Europe to open their doors to refugees after bringing 33 people to Rome from overcrowded, squalid camps on the Greek island of Lesbos. Speaking on his return from a visit to the camps, Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, the Vatican’s almoner, condemned the EU’s handling of the refugee situation, saying that “animals live better in Europe”. The 33 refugees, among them families from Cameroon, Afghanistan and Togo, arrived in Rome on Wednesday night and will be hosted by the Vatican and the Sant’Egidio charity. “We have the money, let’s begin with ourselves … let’s open our rectories, convents and monasteries to at least one family each from the Lesbos refugee camps so that we can empty them all,” Krajewski said after landing at Fiumicino airport, in Rome, with the group from Lesbos. “I have seen terrible situations in the camps.” The population in the island’s … [Read more...] about Pope’s aide takes 33 refugees to Rome after ‘shameful’ Lesbos visit
Australia’s ‘cruel’ asylum regime must end, say 190 experts
Leading psychiatrists, bioethicists, human rights lawyers, novelists, priests and refugee advocates have published a collective document accusing the Australian government of inhumane treatment of asylum seekers and demanding an end to mandatory detention and offshore processing. In a “j’accuse” statement, signed by more than 190 individuals and organisations, the collective argues Australia is “pursuing a policy of detention for asylum seekers, both adults and children, in spite of clear evidence that it causes psychiatric disorders, self-harm and suicide”. It says Australia’s policy of deterring asylum seekers, in which they are all moved to offshore detention centres on Papua New Guinea and Nauru, “requires damaging some to deter others and uses the lives of vulnerable people, the vast majority of whom are found to be refugees, as a means to a political end”. Professor Louise Newman, one of Australia’s foremost developmental … [Read more...] about Australia’s ‘cruel’ asylum regime must end, say 190 experts
