Fox News' Mark Levin has claimed that suspects in the January 6 attack on the Capitol are being treated worse than "terrorists" who are detained at Guantanamo Bay, and falsely claimed that the charges against them have not been made public. Speaking on his Life, Liberty & Levin show on Saturday night, the host asked what is happening to the hundreds of suspects, adding that "we don't have secret trials" in the United States. "What are we hearing, we're hearing that we have more FBI resources applied to this than to anything else, that people are being rounded up all over the country and being charged in some cases with misdemeanors," Levin said. "We have SWAT teams that are being used to collect people and bring them back to Washington. We're hearing that they're in some of the worst jails, and that some of them are being put in solitary confinement, where they only have an hour where they can go outside if that, that they're being fed poor food, that they're being … [Read more...] about Fox News host says 1/6 suspects “are being treated like they are terrorists”
The latest coronavirus news from Canada and around the world Sunday. This file will be updated throughout the day. Web links to longer stories if available . Sunday 8:35 a.m.: Through the long winter and into the frantic first weeks of the third wave, critical care staff at the Hospital for Sick Children could only watch as their colleagues across the province struggled to keep up with the flood of COVID-19 patients streaming into overstretched ICUs. They were grateful the virus largely spared children, and that detailed plans to manage a surge of critically ill kids weren’t needed. But staff felt helpless as COVID patients threatened to overwhelm neighbouring hospitals. Then, at the beginning of April, after provincial modelling predicted there could be 800 COVID patients in ICUs and physicians worried about the grim possibility of rationing care, Sick Kids enacted its pandemic plan of last resort. For the first time in its history, the hospital would admit adult … [Read more...] about Today’s coronavirus news: The how and why Sick Kids transformed to treat gravely ill adults with COVID during the pandemic
LONDON -- For several months the British media have been anticipating the advent of GB News, a new conservative news channel and self-proclaimed antidote to the "metropolitan bias" of mainstream media, embodied by legacy broadcasters the BBC and Sky News. British broadcasting, unlike in the U.S., is constrained by impartiality laws. Yet the new channel's focus on pundit-led journalism, and an avowed mission statement to challenge liberal orthodoxies, represents something of a sea change in U.K. media. While the founders have largely dismissed suggestions the channel will be a British equivalent to Fox News, it is easy to see why such comparisons have been drawn by commentators . "I'm doing it because I believe the direction of news debate in Britain is increasingly woke and out of touch with the majority of its people," GB News founder and chairman Andrew Neil, a former veteran of the BBC, wrote in The Sunday Express , a tabloid, back in February. Yet since its launch … [Read more...] about Fox News-style network embraces UK culture wars, will it work?
This story about kindergarten enrollment was produced by The Hechinger Report , a nonprofit, independent news organization focused on inequality and innovation in education. On April 20, Kentwood Elementary in Los Angeles opened its doors to students. It was news Lauren Phillips, 37, had been waiting for. After months of schooling through a screen, her 6-year-old daughter, Lola, would get the real kindergarten experience. As it turned out, in-person kindergarten wasn’t much different from virtual. Lola sat in a room with her classmates while her teacher, who was home for medical reasons, taught them online. A substitute teacher made sure kids had the chance to use the bathroom and get water and whatever else they might need to do. “It was just so frustrating to find out that the teacher, who we love, was basically going to be remote,” said Phillips. “If we knew that, we would have kept our daughter home.” Dissatisfaction with remote learning has played out with … [Read more...] about Remote learning a bust?
