Hi-tech criminals jailed for 72 months The municipal People's Court on Wednesday sentenced two defendants to 72 months imprisonment for unlawfully appropriating property via the web. Nguyen Tong Hai, 23, of Ha Noi's Hoai Duc District and Quang Minh Hai, 25, of northern Vinh Phuc Province's Tam Dao District were sentenced to 42 and 30 months jail. The two defendants also were forced to pay compensation for the money they unlawfully appropriated. It was reported that the two men created false websites with similar interfaces and content from VTC Technology & Digital Content Company, a member of the Viet Nam Multimedia Corporation - VTC, defrauding game players more than VND81 million (US$3,800) between March and June last year. Party review to assess socialist orientation of market economy A review undertaken by the Party Central Committee's Economic Commission will show how well the nation's market economy has maintained the country's socialist principles, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said yesterday, March 19. During a working session with the commission in the capital city, he said that compiling information for the review, which will study institutional tools used to develop Viet Nam's market economy, was a very complex and time consuming task. Dung, who is also a Politburo member, expressed the Government's wholehearted support for the commission, which he said aimed at the common goal of socio-economic prosperity. Vietnam opens honorary consulate in Israel Vietnam opened a honorary consulate in the Israeli city of Haifa on March 17. Igal David Ahouvi, an Israeli businessman, has been appointed as honorary consul of Vietnam in the city. On the occasion, Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav emphasised the importance of the opening to further boosting bilateral ties between the two countries. He underlined his city’s role in and contribution to the Israeli economy, and affirmed his wish to step up the city’s multifaceted cooperation with Vietnam, especially in economics, technology and education. For his part, Ambassador Ta Duy Chinh said the new office will enhance bilateral ties between two countries, and Vietnam and Haifa in particular. UK Prince presents helmets to children Michael George Charles Franklin, Prince of Kent, the UK, presented helmets to pupils at Hanoi’s Van Phuc Primary School on February 28. It is part of a “helmets for children” project sponsored by the Asia Injury Prevention Foundation (AIP) and the UK Road Safety Fund (FIA). The Prince said he has toured many countries, met world leaders and told them about Vietnam’s efforts in enforcing traffic laws and encouraging road users to wear helmets when hitting the road. He attributed the success to efforts by Government agencies, non-government organizations, donors and communication agencies. On the occasion, he gave a road traffic safety award named after him to Vietnam Television (VTV) for its contribution to disseminating information to raise public awareness of traffic safety.
