From the Beast from the East to a scorching summer: Extreme weather in the UK made 2018 a ‘rollercoaster’ year for wildlife says the National Trust
For wildlife, 2018 was the 'most remarkable' year for decades in the view of the National Trust. From the minus zero temperatures triggered by the 'Beast from the East' - as the chilly Siberian weather in February was known - to the scorching summer, the year was a 'rollercoaster ride' for plants and animals. In its review of the year, the charity said this year's 'winners' were many bats and butterflies, species who have suffered huge drops in numbers in recent years. Fungi too, sprouted more than usual in the past 12 months. The migrant silvery moth was seen in its highest ever numbers at Mount Stewart in Northern Ireland. New species also arrived including the dark green fritillary, also recorded at Mount Stewart. Losers included guillemots, shags, fulmar and kittiwakes as the cold snap at the end of February killed huge numbers of shellfish, including lobsters, starfish and fish on the East coast on which the birds feed. Nettle feeding butterflies such as the small … [Read more...] about From the Beast from the East to a scorching summer: Extreme weather in the UK made 2018 a ‘rollercoaster’ year for wildlife says the National Trust
Facebook’s ‘war room’ revealed: Secure office houses dozens of experts battling election interference around the world
Facebook has revealed a physical 'war room' at its California headquarters as part of its efforts to tackle election interference tactics. In September, in the run-up to elections in both Brazil and the US, it created a physical room at its Menlo Park campus from where it says its elections interference prevention experts can work together. Inside the secure room are dozens of employees staring intently at their monitors while data streams across giant dashboards. They are only allowed to leave the room for short bathroom breaks or to grab food to eat at their desks. On the walls are posters of the sort Facebook frequently uses to caution or exhort its employees. One reads, 'Nothing at Facebook is somebody else's problem.' Facebook worker Erin Landers leaves the company's 'War Room,' during a media demonstration . The war room, which will ramp up activity for the November 6 midterm US elections, is the most concrete sign of Facebook's efforts to weed out … [Read more...] about Facebook’s ‘war room’ revealed: Secure office houses dozens of experts battling election interference around the world
Windies on a mission in India: Pollard
IMAGE: West Indies lost the T20I series against India 2-1 but will hope to bounce back in the ODIs. Photograph: BCCI Ahead of the ODI series against India, West Indies skipper Kieron Pollard has said that all-rounder Roston Chase is a great asset for the team as he can play multiple roles in the game. "I think he brings a good balance to our team. He is a Test batsman as he has the Test hundred. I think he is a great asset for us. He can play any role and given that he can bowl as well," Pollard said on Saturday, ahead of the first ODI."I think it gives an opportunity to play an extra bowler, all-rounder or a batter. He has been very valuable to us. We saw his talent and trying to exploit what he can give for himself. He is going to be an integral part for us going forward," he added. The Caribbean side had a miserable performance in the ODI format after failing to teach the knock-out stage of the ICC World Cup in July. The team lost to 2-0 in the home series against India and after … [Read more...] about Windies on a mission in India: Pollard
Bhuvneshwar Kumar replaced by Shardul Thakur for ODIs against West Indies
India's bowling coach B Arun did not divulge the nature of the injury but said Bhuvneshwar is being assessed by the team physio. "The physios are taking a call. They would give a press release later in the evening after the assessments," Arun told reporters at Chennai. Later a BCCI release pinned it as groin injury picked up during the T20Is against Windies. The 29-year-old Bhuvneshwar will miss all the three ODIs and the selectors have named Shardul Thakur as his replacement. Bhuvneshwar returned from a long injury lay-off during the T20Is against West Indies which India won 2-1. He took two wickets in the series decider at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, after going wicketless in Hyderabad and Thiruvananthapuram. India had already lost Shikhar Dhawan to knee injury that he sustained during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in Surat. Mayank Agarwal was drafted in as his replacement. If Bhuvneshwar gets indeed ruled out of the series it will be a massive setback for the pacer as he has been … [Read more...] about Bhuvneshwar Kumar replaced by Shardul Thakur for ODIs against West Indies
