Local movie to vie for Best Foreign Film prize at OscarsNguyen Quy The movie Cha cong con (Father and Son) directed and scripted by Vietnamese director Luong Dinh Dung has been selected to compete in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 90th Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars. According to the film selection council, the paternal-themed movie has gained the highest vote, surpassing two other nominees – Dao cua dan ngu cu (The Way Station) directed by Vietnamese actress Hong Anh and Sut (Shoot) by director Viet Max, according to local media. Dung told the Daily in an email interview that he is overwhelmed with joy as his debut production has been chosen to attend the 2018 Oscars. Buffalo Boy wins best foreign language film (20-01-2006) HA NOI — The Internationally acclaimed film Mua Len Trau (Buffalo Boy) has won the title of Best Foreign Language Film of the Year at the Palm Springs Film Festival in California. The film, directed by Vietnamese-American Nguyen Vo Nghiem Minh, has already received prizes at several international film festivals over the past year, including the Chicago International Film Festival, the Lorcano International Film Festival in Switzerland and the Amien Film Festival in France. The screenplay was adapted from one of Viet Nam’s most popular short stories, writer Son Nam’s Huong Rung Ca Mau(Scent of the Woods in Ca Mau). "A Separation" won the Oscar for best foreign language film on Sunday, becoming the first Iranian movie to win the honor. Written and directed by Asghar Farhadi, the domestic drama focuses on a couple going through a divorce and touches on traditions, justice, and male-female relationships in modern Iran. "A Separation" was regarded as the front-runner for the foreign language Oscar after sweeping the awards circuit in Europe and the United States. A movie adapted from a Vietnamese children book has been submitted to the 89th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. “Toi Thay Hoa Vang Tren Co Xanh” (Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass), adapted from the namesake book by best seller children author Nguyen Nhat Anh, will represent Vietnam at the 2017 Oscar award in February, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said Friday. Deputy minister Vuong Duy Bien said the ministry’s voting board highly appreciated the film by Victor Vu and decided to submit it to the Academy Awards. VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnam did not send any movie to compete for the Best Foreign Language Film Award of the Oscar 2011. This year it has many films that meet Oscar’s standards. The deadline to submit movies to the organizing board of the Oscar 2012 is October 1, but many countries have completed this task. Only five films will be nominated and one will win the Best Foreign Language Film Award. Last year Vietnam did not submit any entry because nominated films did not qualify the criteria of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). This year, many Vietnamese, not mentioning the contents, meet the AMPAS’ criteria. Films competing in the Foreign Language Film category must have been first released in the country submitting them during the eligibility period defined by the rules of the Academy, and must have been exhibited for at least seven consecutive days in a commercial movie theater.
