Hanoi (VNA) – Art lovers on February 27 had a chance to enjoy various types of art at the first street fair held at an art hub in Hanoi. Hundreds of people gathered at Creative City, 1 Luong Yen street, to view paintings, sculptures, performing arts and listen to music. There were also live performances by French visual artist Anais Bourquin and Vietnamese artist Dao Anh Khanh. "I feel as if I were at a street art fair in my hometown," said Marie Jansen from the Netherlands. "It's so much fun and relaxing. Yet, there should be more activities to make the fair busier." Painter Phuong Vu Manh, who created the event, said he was inspired by street art performances he saw during a recent trip to Europe. "I saw them so free, to live in their arts and entertain audiences," he said. "I really want to set up such areas for street arts in Hanoi, where artists perform, while other people relax after working long hours. Its success is typical of the man who made it, funny actor-producer-businessman Phuoc Sang. Besides being general director of the Entertainment Investment Corporation, Sang owns three theatres, an entertainment centre, a cinema studio and a restaurant that hosts weddings. But few people know he was a poor student who had to mend motorbike tyres so that he could study. At 16, he joined Theatre Art School 2, which had just opened. While in the second year of the course, he organised shows for his class to perform to raise money for their tuition fees. Musical copycats Many popular foreign songs have alternate, Vietnamese versions. According to one South Korean newspaper, a Vietnamese singer named Cao Thai Son released a music video that is almost identical to Se7en's official video for "Come Back to Me Part 2", released in 2006. Another singer, Ung Hoang Phuc, took advantage of the Vietnamese market with a clip that many see as a blatant copy of Tættere På Himlen, by Burhan G. Phuc defended himself by saying, "Borrowing ideas in music is normal. Singers do it in Vietnam and all over the world." These are not isolated incidents. Emerging filmmaker awarded Knight of Arts and Letters title
Viet Nam News The Knight of Arts and Letters title was bestowed on Điệp by French National Cinema Centre President Fédérique Bredin at a ceremony to mark French President Francois Hollande's official visit to Việt Nam. Điệp is the second Vietnamese filmmaker to be awarded this title after documentary filmmaker Lê Mạnh Thích. Điệp was conferred with the title following the success of her first motion picture titled Đập Cánh Giữa Không Trung (Flapping in the Middle of Nowhere). The movie has been screened at domestic and international film festivals and has won several prizes. These awards include the 2014 Venice International Film Critic's Week, Best Director at the 16th International Film Festival Bratislava in Slovakia, Jury's Special Mention at the Festival of the Three Continents -- an annual film festival in Nantes, France -- besides a Special Prize at the third Hà Nội International Film Festival (HANIFF).
