The newest Ford Mustang made a splash when it was unveiled this weekend. An all-electric SUV, the vehicle has enough room for a cooler under its hood and can reportedly accelerate from zero to 60 in well under four seconds. But one of the biggest changes it could usher in might have more to do with the autoworkers it ultimately displaces, as the assembly of electric cars requires just a fraction of the workers needed for traditional vehicles. And as more automakers pivot toward electric vehicles, the news that Ford's iconic brand would be ditching a fuel-powered engine for a battery-run system underscored how far along the electric car revolution has come in the United States. Electric cars represent a significant step toward reducing reliance on fossil fuels and carbon emissions that scientists say are beginning to wreak serious havoc on the world. About 1 million workers are employed in auto manufacturing, primarily for vehicles with internal combustion engines, out of about 12.8 … [Read more...] about The new Ford Mustang is electric. But battery-powered cars raise complicated questions for workers.

The vast majority of American drivers could switch to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) tomorrow and carry on with their lives unaffected, according to a new study in Nature Energy. What's more, those BEVs need not be a $100,000 Tesla, either. That's the conclusion from a team at MIT and the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico that looked at the potential for BEV adoption in the US in light of current driving patterns. Perhaps most interestingly, the study found that claim to be true for a wide range of cities with very distinct geography and even per-capita gasoline consumption. The authors—led by MIT's Jessika Trancik—used the Nissan Leaf as their representative vehicle. The Leaf is one of the best-selling BEVs on the market, second only to the Tesla Model S in 2015 (10,990 sold vs 13,300 Teslas). But it's not particularly long-legged; although the vehicle got an optional battery bump from 24kWh to 30kWh for 2016, its quoted range is 107 miles on a full charge. You don't need … [Read more...] about Shorter-range electric cars meet the needs of almost all US drivers
The Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said last week he planned to build three new lithium battery factories in Britain and the party also announced plans for a string of community car clubs, where people could hire electric cars “as easily as buying a pizza.” But will it be enough to persuade manufacturers, traders and customers to switch from petrol and diesel to electric? In 2018 a total of 15,474 fully electric cars were sold - only 1.4 percent of the total - and another 59,911 plug-in hybrids. — The Nordic Reporter (@nordicreporter) September 25, 2019 Although Volvo, BMW and Range Rover have announced plans to phase out petrol- and diesel-only vehicles, the infrastructure is simply not there at present for customers in the UK to switch over en masse to electric cars. Mr Corbyn told the annual conference in Brighton last week: “Bringing our emissions down to net zero won’t happen by itself. IT will only be possible with massive public … [Read more...] about ‘Electric Cars Are Going to Be Huge’ But Will Labour’s Battery Factories Kickstart a Sales Boom?
Something to look forward to: The EV market is gaining more entrants by the minute, and BMW's i4 is just one of the three cars that the automaker plans to introduce in the near future. Based on the BMW fifth-gen EV platform, a camouflaged prototype of the electric sedan was joined by the iNext and the iX3 SUV currently undergoing winter testing. BMW's past electric models wearing the 'i' moniker include the futuristic-looking, but niche, i3 hatchback and the i8 sports car. Even though both are plug-in hybrids, over the years, the company has been refining its EV technology underpinning those models to power its first fully electric midsize sedan: The BMW i4. Set to arrive in late 2021, winter testing shots of the i4 prototype were shared by BMW along with other key specs. These include a 390kW motor capable of producing 523 hp and an 80kWh battery pack that'll take it up to 373 miles (600 km) on a single charge, according to the more optimistic WLTP cycle. BMW's fifth-generation … [Read more...] about BMW’s upcoming i4 electric sedan will rival the Tesla Model 3
When a BMW i8 at a showroom in the Dutch province of Brabant began smoking yesterday morning, firefighters there had just the solution. Advertisement Google translates the Facebook post thusly: This morning an electric car in a showroom started smoking. Due to quick acting from the employees of the garage and the fire department, the car was driven outside. Because it’s an electric car, inventive acting was needed. The car was immersed in a tank filled with water, because extinguishing it the ‘normal’ way can be difficult with these cars. For the next 24 hours, the car willr emain in the tank. I’ll be honest, I didn’t think it was practical to dunk a smoking car into a giant tub of water before today, but now I’m learning (as we wrote yesterday) that this solution actually makes a lot of sense. The i8, for the record, is a hybrid, with a three-cylinder, 1.5-liter engine coupled with 11.6 kWh battery powering an electric motor that all combine … [Read more...] about Firefighters Drop Smoking
