Police Detain Knife-Wielding Man Attempting Stabbing Attack Near Jewish School In France

· March 5, 2021 ·

French police arrested a man after he attempted a stabbing attack outside of a Jewish school and kosher market in Marseille, France on Friday morning. Security guards at the Yavne School in Marseille noticed a suspicious man brandishing a knife outside their premises. Right before the suspect attempted to enter a nearby kosher market, the guards swiftly detained him before he was able to harm anyone, local police told the Associated Press (AP). The area was a hotspot for the local Jewish community where students and parents often buy food and meals before the Sabbath at the nearby kosher market. Famine stalks 16M people in Yemen

· March 2, 2021 ·

CAIRO: A United Nations humanitarian agency warned that more than 16 million people in Yemen would go hungry this year, with already some half a million people in the war-torn country living in famine-like conditions. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA, said the risk of large-scale famine in the Arab world’s poorest country “has never been more acute,” adding that the years-long conflict, economic decline and institutional collapse created enormous humanitarian needs in all sectors. The stark warning comes a day before a pledging conference co-hosted by Sweden and Switzerland. The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will appeal for $3.85 billion in relief aid for Yemen this year. The response to the UN appeal is unlikely to meet expectations, given that the coronavirus pandemic and its devastating consequences hit economies around the globe. Wealthy Gulf donors such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which contributed generously to … [Read more...] about Famine stalks 16M people in Yemen

Thailand News Today | Pattaya bank scam & Burmese coup update | February 2

· February 2, 2021 ·

CORRECTION: In the first story Jett referred to a Chinese man losing 130 billion baht. The correct amount was 130 million baht. We apologise for the error. Hundreds, perhaps more than 400, investors have been defrauded by a bank manager at a Kasikorn bank branch in Pattaya. The manager, named in a police report as “Mr. Gob”, was promising investors 3.5% interest, per month, yes… PER MONTH… for cash investments. It appears his high interest rate attracted hundreds of people wanting to take advantage of the generous terms. One investor, who only found out about the scam yesterday when he visited the branch for his monthly rolling over of funds, told The Thaiger that he has lost 250,000 baht at this stage, with no official response from the Kasikorn head office in Bangkok yet being made about the situation. Mr B, who has asked us to protect his identity, knows of some investors who invested many millions of baht and even one Chinese man who had allegedly invested 130 million … [Read more...] about Thailand News Today | Pattaya bank scam & Burmese coup update | February 2

‘Relief’ as educators show out for COVID-19 vaccine appointments in Lafayette

· March 7, 2021 ·

Lafayette teacher Renee Box squeezed her COVID-19 vaccination appointment between repainting her daughter’s bedroom and cooking dinner for her family on a Sunday. The seemingly mundane moment was filled with joy and relief for Box, one of hundreds of teachers getting vaccinated in Lafayette Parish after the state expanded the vaccination eligibility list to include educators and school support staff nearly two weeks ago. Box, a blended third- through fifth-grade teacher with Louisiana Virtual Charter Academy, said she felt a sense of relief and renewed confidence when she received her first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine at a Walgreens in Scott. “This is my responsibility to our community ... I am able and willing to be vaccinated and so I should. It’s not just for me or my family, it’s for others ... so that our hospitals aren’t so full, so that people can get the treatment they need when they need it, so the things we love and enjoy about our culture, which involves a lot of … [Read more...] about ‘Relief’ as educators show out for COVID-19 vaccine appointments in Lafayette
