The latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey said a measly 39 percent of Filipino families with members studying via online distance learning have “strong” internet connection. The nationwide poll was conducted from November 21 to 25 among 1,500 respondents, aged five to 20. Of the 39 percent, the SWS survey said 26 percent related that their internet connection was “somewhat strong” while 14 percent said it was “very strong.” Forty-six percent of the respondents who said they had strong internet connection were from Balance Luzon (outside Mega Manila), followed by Metro Manila with 36 percent, the Visayas with 38 percent and Mindanao with 30 percent. The SWS survey also revealed that 86 percent of families with members studying through distance learning spent an average of P901 per month on internet service providers. Kris Aquino, Bimby clap back at homophobic comments on Bimby’s sexuality
As the son of the Queen of All Media Kris Aquino, Bimby Aquino-Yap has been raised in the spotlight. He has occasionally joined his mom’s media appearances and online videos, attracting attention himself with his own commentary. Kris admitted in a video featuring their home that “it’s not easy to be my kids” given that their life is constantly scrutinized. Bimby noted that some comments on social media were critical of him. “People think like I’m a homosexual.” Instead of addressing his sexuality, Kris turned the discussion into one against homophobia. “Don’t be homophobic, right?” “Yeah,” Bimby agreed. “That’s the whole message and whatever your choice in life is, that’s your choice.” To the camera, Bimby said, “Why would you judge a child?” “Don’t judge a child and don’t make the decision for the child,” said Kris. “It’s because we’re still learning about ourselves and puberty hasn’t struck for me yet,” added Bimby. He has since … [Read more...] about Kris Aquino, Bimby clap back at homophobic comments on Bimby’s sexuality
Top 10 Tourist Attractions in Chiang Rai: Excluding Temples
Chiang Rai – This beautiful city in Thailand has a history that goes further back than its more than three-decade duration as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom. It is considered one of the oldest settlements in Thailand. Judicial jousting emerges at Supreme Court of Canada
OTTAWA—This is what brawls look like on the top court bench. Judges don’t throw off their robes and come to blows. What they do — judicial jousting — is more subtle. Split rulings. Lengthy dissenting opinions. Constitutional decisions that see judges split not only into two groups, but sometimes going three or four different ways. Wary court watchers are now wondering if the Supreme Court of Canada is as divided or as polarized as the rest of us. Since becoming prime minister in 2015, Justin Trudeau has named three new judges to the country’s top court, and elevated Justice Richard Wagner to the post of Chief Justice. In that time, the nine-member Supreme Court of Canada has turned into an unruly crew. Outwardly, they are friendly, collegial and professional. But a look at their rulings — as legal scholars and lawyers are increasingly pointing out — shows a judicial team “of equals” that is struggling to find its voice as Canada’s top court. When the latest rookie, … [Read more...] about Judicial jousting emerges at Supreme Court of Canada
Escalating violence ups pressure for Myanmar action
BANGKOK: The escalation of violence in Myanmar as authorities crack down on protests against the Feb 1 coup is raising pressure for more sanctions against the junta, even as countries struggle over how to best sway military leaders inured to global condemnation. The challenge is made doubly difficult by fears of harming ordinary citizens who were already suffering from an economic slump worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic but are braving risks of arrest and injury to voice outrage over the military takeover. Still, activists and experts say there are ways to ramp up pressure on the regime, especially by cutting off sources of funding and access to the tools of repression. The UN special envoy on Friday (Mar 5) urged the Security Council to act to quell junta violence that this week killed about 50 demonstrators and injured scores more. “There is an urgency for collective action," Christine Schraner Burgener told the meeting. “How much more can we allow the Myanmar military … [Read more...] about Escalating violence ups pressure for Myanmar action
