As plans forge ahead for the Tokyo Olympics , the Okinawa island Miyakojima has banned the torch relay from running through it. The relay, which began March 25 in Fukushima, has already been detoured several times, once being directed into an empty park in Osaka, and again rerouted in Matsuyama, the capital of the Ehime Prefecture. The Tokyo Olympic organizers and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) are set to unveil plans this week to explain how 15,400 Olympic and Paralympic athletes can compete in Japan in three months in the midst of a pandemic. The Tokyo Olympics, originally scheduled to begin last year in late July, has had no shortage of hurdles in trying to overcome the effects of COVID-19. TOKYO - The Tokyo Olympics torch relay will take another detour this weekend when it enters the southern island of Okinawa. A leg of the relay on Okinawa’s resort island of Miyakojima set for Sunday has been cancelled altogether with coronavirus cases surging in Japan. Other legs on Okinawa will take place. A 17-day state of emergency went into effect on April 25 in some areas in Japan, which has shut down department stores and bars in Tokyo and the country’s second largest metropolis of Osaka. “We don’t want people from outside the island coming in. Human life is at stake,” Hayako Shimizu, a teacher in Miyakojima, told the Associated Press. The relay, which will involve 10,000 runners from every corner of Japan, started six weeks ago and has been mostly on schedule despite major rerouting in Osaka and in Matsuyama City in nearby Ehime prefecture. TOKYO (REUTERS) - Six people who helped with Japan's Olympic torch relay have been diagnosed with Covid-19, taking the total number of participants in the event who have been hit by the coronavirus to eight, organisers said. The six people, who included a man in his 20s and another man in his 30s, helped on the relay in the southern prefecture of Kagoshima on April 27, Games organiser Tokyo 2020 said in a statement late on Saturday (May 1). All of them assisted with traffic control and wore masks, with three of them doing so in the city of Amami and the other three in the city of Kirishima, said the organisers. Earlier last month, two other people who helped with the torch relay on the southern island of Shikoku were diagnosed with Covid-19, including a police officer in his 30s who guided traffic in Kagawa prefecture.
