Monarch’s engineering arm collapses with loss of 450 jobs
The engineering arm of the collapsed airline Monarch has gone into administration, resulting in the loss of 450 jobs. KPMG was appointed to carry out the process after Monarch Aircraft Engineering (MAE), owned by the private equity firm Greybull Capital, ran into financial difficulties. The accounting firm said the business was unsustainable in its present form following a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) in October that led customers to seek alternative suppliers. David Pike, a restructuring partner at KPMG, said: “Following the administration of other Monarch entities in 2017, MAEL sought to build its customer base to replace the loss of business from the former airline. “Through the insolvency of the airline, however, the company inherited significant debts and claims. A Weekend With The All-Electric BMW i3
I’ve never driven a BMW, or an electric car, so I might have been an odd choice to test drive the new BMW i3, the German car maker’s all-electric hatchback, which packs the equivalent of 170 HP into its electric engine. But an unexpected reviewer might be the perfect candidate for an unexpected car. The car, which was on limited display at CES back in January, is on sale as of May in the U.S. and should go on sale shortly in Canada. The version I drove features an optional range extender which adds around 90km of fuel-powered driving via a backup 650cc motor, but the base trim features only the electric motor, with an eight-module battery located along the length of the floor that delivers a maximum of 160km in normal mode, or up to 200km in Eco Pro or Eco Pro+ energy conservation modes. While BMW had the technical ability to make a car with a 400km range, like those offered by some of its competitors, the company tells me that it wanted to emphasize the driving experience … [Read more...] about A Weekend With The All-Electric BMW i3
BMW says ‘ja’ to Android Auto
BMW today announced that it is finally bringing Android Auto to its vehicles, starting in July 2020. With that, it will join Apple’s CarPlay in the company’s vehicles. The first live demo of Android Auto in a BMW will happen at CES 2020 next month and after that, it will become available as an update to drivers in 20 countries with cars that feature the BMW OS 7.0. BMW will support Android Auto over a wireless connection, though, which somewhat limits its comparability. Only two years ago, the company said that it wasn’t interested in supporting Android Auto. At the time, Dieter May, who was then the senior VP for Digital Services and Business Model, explicitly told me that the company wanted to focus on its first-party apps in order to retain full control over the in-car interface and that he wasn’t interested in seeing Android Auto in BMWs. May has since left the company, though it’s also worth noting that Android Auto itself has become significantly … [Read more...] about BMW says ‘ja’ to Android Auto
