Daily Harvest review: Easy, healthy, real meals on hand when you need them

· March 1, 2021 ·

Most of us love the idea of healthy food that's quick to make and easy to come by, but there are some futuristic projections about how we'll eventually eat that aren't very appetizing to a guy like me. Soylent -style nutrient mixtures, protein pastes, powders and even *gasp* pills to keep us nutritionally satiated and freed up to spend time on endeavors of the nonculinary sort. While I suppose I can understand the practical appeal of these time-saving food "innovations," I just simply cannot imagine relying on them myself. But what if there were a happy medium in which you could have real meals on hand consistently that don't require much thought, planning or prep? Save $10 off your first 3 boxes with promo code HELLO30 See at Daily Harvest Daily Harvest is a prepared meal delivery service that aims for that space in the middle, falling somewhere between pseudo space-age diet plan and old-school cooking and eating, making it worthy of investigation. With … [Read more...] about Daily Harvest review: Easy, healthy, real meals on hand when you need them

COVID-19: These Singapore F&B businesses are now offering islandwide delivery services

· April 9, 2020 ·

With circuit breaker measures well and truly in place in order to flatten the COVID-19 curve, food delivery services have never been more important to both F&B outlets and customers alike than they are right now. Homegrown restaurants, your favourite hawker stalls, eateries, cafes and high-end dining places are all providing a plethora of convenient delivery services and deals. One good hack is to order directly from the restaurant as third-party apps often charge the establishment commission fees. That said, we'd encourage you to be extra kind to anyone delivering food since they are doing extra work and putting their health at risk. Do tip generously (when you can) and support these local businesses. READ: COVID-19: Here's how you can help save your favourite local small businesses We've collected a list of outlets that are doing direct delivery and will be updating it regularly, so you can constantly keep an eye on what your best options are. Bon appetit! … [Read more...] about COVID-19: These Singapore F&B businesses are now offering islandwide delivery services

Malaysian boy lives alone in Singapore for months, so that he won’t miss school during COVID-19 outbreak

· May 31, 2020 ·

SINGAPORE: Malaysian student Koh Ji Sen is in a hurry for school to start on Tuesday. For more than two months, this 14-year-old has been living on his own in Singapore, isolated from his family in Tebrau, a suburb of Johor Bahru. More than anything, he misses the social interaction with others. “I feel lonely sometimes because of a lack of support and human contact,” said Ji Sen, who studies at a school in Yishun. “I’m just happy for school to start; it’ll be easier to pass the time.” When Malaysia declared a nationwide movement control order on Mar 16 — during the school holidays — his parents decided that he would have to move to Singapore as soon as possible. His father, Koh Choon Meng had reservations about leaving his son without adult supervision, but he did not want Ji Sen to miss out on school. “We were a bit nervous … We didn’t know if he could do it (live alone),” Koh said. “He’s been dependent on my wife all along. If he can’t cope, we’d have to bring him … [Read more...] about Malaysian boy lives alone in Singapore for months, so that he won’t miss school during COVID-19 outbreak

‘I thought it was too good to be true’: Photographer offers free service to hawkers and F&B outlets

· May 27, 2020 ·

SINGAPORE: The lunch crowd is normally a force to be reckoned with and Mr Eric Lee, who runs Arcade Fish Soup, would attest to that. The 17-year-old franchise has three stalls in the heart of the Central Business District (CBD) and the snaking queues were always a “good problem”. But when "circuit breaker" measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 were announced in April, Mr Lee’s world turned topsy-turvy. With most workplaces closing and implementing work-from-home arrangements, Arcade Fish Soup’s sales declined as foot traffic in the CBD fell sharply. “We’ve been at that location for so long, most people who know us work in the CBD. So it was really awful, we suffered at least an 80 per cent drop in business.” Mr Lee’s business, which thrived on word-on-mouth before, has never employed any form of advertising or delivery services. But with the new measures in place, where no dine-ins were allowed, the 37-year-old was left with “no choice”. “We had to start offering … [Read more...] about ‘I thought it was too good to be true’: Photographer offers free service to hawkers and F&B outlets

Food delivery services add tonnes of plastic to Thailand’s landfills during COVID-19 crisis

· May 12, 2020 ·

BANGKOK: Since the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, having food delivered at one’s doorstep has become a new normal for many people in Thailand. But while food delivery services offer more options and convenience to consumers, they have also added tonnes of plastic to Thailand’s struggling waste management system. Before the health crisis hit, the Southeast Asian country generated about 5,500 tonnes of plastic waste per day, according to Thailand Environment Institute’s (TEI) president Dr Wijarn Simachaya. Today, the number has jumped to 6,300 tonnes, he said. “The impact of food delivery services is considerable, especially in Bangkok, where the industry has grown tremendously,” he told CNA. Plastic use has soared, even as total waste generated in the Thai capital has decreased. Bangkok typically produces about 10,500 tonnes of total waste per day, but the number has dropped by 12 per cent since March, largely because the global pandemic has stopped tourists from … [Read more...] about Food delivery services add tonnes of plastic to Thailand’s landfills during COVID-19 crisis
