Prince Philip: BBC Brushes Off Deluge Of Complaints About Blanket Coverage

· April 15, 2021 ·

The BBC has brushed off complaints about its wall-to-wall coverage of Prince Philip ’s death after being contacted by a record number of disgruntled viewers. The BBC received 109,741 complaints about the extent of its output on the Duke of Edinburgh last Friday. Such was the volume of concern, the UK broadcaster created a dedicated complaints form, through which people could log their displeasure. Responding to the complaints today, the BBC said the changes it made to schedules across television and radio were carefully considered and “reflect the role the BBC plays as the national broadcaster, during moments of national significance.” In a statement, the BBC said: “The passing of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh was a significant event which generated a lot of interest both nationally and internationally. We acknowledge some viewers were unhappy with the level of coverage given, and impact this had on the billed TV and Radio schedules. “We do not make … [Read more...] about Prince Philip: BBC Brushes Off Deluge Of Complaints About Blanket Coverage

Think of NFTs As a Brush

· April 15, 2021 ·

Animation: QuickHoney Someday, there may be a Francis Bacon of NFTs. I love the idea of a non-fungible token — the way it lets artists cut out the middleman and bring their own work to a viable market. But so far, the NFTs that have gotten attention for making art history have been singularly unoriginal on any visual level. They are a combination of crapola, kitsch, and dull; the influences are Warhol, Pop, surrealistic illustration, typical white male Abstract Expressionism, calendar art, and psychedelic screen-savers. Many of them are navel-gazing neo-conceptual NFTs about NFTs, all culminating in a kind of living-dead NFT Zombie Formalism. None of this is inherent to NFTs themselves. An NFT can be a tool, not unlike a camera, a ballpoint pen, etching, or lithography. Over time, artists have figured out how to use these instruments in ways that were never imagined at their invention. Who knew that one-point perspective would produce the sensual receding spaces of Raphael? Or … [Read more...] about Think of NFTs As a Brush

UN warns of crisis for Mozambique’s children after extremist attacks

· April 15, 2021 ·

MAPUTO (AFP) - Hundreds of children became separated from their families in the panic after extremist attacks in northern Mozambique in March, and thousands more are suffering from malnutrition, Unicef warned on Thursday (April 15). The UN children's agency has managed to shelter 250 children separated from their families in the assault on Palma, a town in northern Cabo Delgado province long prey to militant attacks that have mounted in ferocity over the past year. Alone after being separated from her family in an attack, one six-year-old girl wandered through the brush of northern Mozambique for four days before being taken in by Unicef. Struck dumb following the late March violence, the girl "has been speaking for the past three days", Mr Manuel Fontaine, emergency operations director at the UN children's agency, told AFP. "She's managed to tell us that she had a grandfather. We're doing everything we can to track him down." The foundlings represent a fraction of the 2,500 lost … [Read more...] about UN warns of crisis for Mozambique’s children after extremist attacks
