Measures in Budget 2020 appropriate for now to deal with COVID-19 challenges: DPM Heng

· February 28, 2020 ·

SINGAPORE: Singapore’s overall spending in Budget 2020 is “appropriate” for the current challenges brought on by the outbreak of COVID-19, with support being applied to where it matters most, said Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat on Friday (Feb 28). In the first part of his wrap-up speech delivered on the third day of the debate on the Budget Statement, Mr Heng said: "We have calibrated it to put sufficient purchasing power back into the economy, while injecting a boost of confidence. “In fact, our budget is higher than what most economists had expected. This took into account the context of the global slowdown and wider uncertainties," he added in a speech where he also announced a special bonus for frontline officers , as well as pay cuts for political office holders and Members of Parliament. The Big Read: For migrant workers in trouble, navigating Singapore’s legal system can be a challenge

· September 14, 2020 ·

SINGAPORE: Ms Simpen, 49, who goes by one name and has worked as a domestic helper in Singapore for 13 years, was among those in the Indonesian community here who were cheered by the news of the acquittal of their compatriot, Ms Parti Liyani. “She did not do anything wrong so it is good she is not going to jail,” said Ms Simpen. Ms Parti, 46, had earlier been found guilty by a district judge of stealing S$34,000 worth of items from her employer, former Changi Airport Group chairman Liew Mun Leong, and his family. She was sentenced to two years and two months’ jail. But on appeal, her conviction and sentence for four counts of theft were overturned by the High Court on Sep 4, with Justice Chan Seng Onn ruling that the district court had failed to consider several points, and that Mr Liew and his son had an “improper motive” in accusing Ms Parti of theft back in 2016. On Sep 8, Ms Parti’s case was formally concluded when she was given a discharge amounting to an acquittal on … [Read more...] about The Big Read: For migrant workers in trouble, navigating Singapore’s legal system can be a challenge

The Future of Digital Mental Health Treatment

· January 31, 2021 ·

The field of Digital Mental Health Treatment (DMHT) has exploded over the past decade. DMHT includes a wide range of technology-related interventions, such as internet-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), smartphone apps, virtual reality, therapeutic video games, and more recently treatments using artificial intelligence (e. g ., therapist bots). Some estimate the number of mental health apps to be well over 10,000 available. DMHTs have the potential to disrupt the current model of mental healthcare, providing access to treatment for many more people, as well as augmenting existing treatments to make them more effective. However, most of the DMHTs currently available are unlikely to improve mental health care. For example, in a 2016 review, researchers evaluated over 100 CBT smartphone apps (Huguet et none had been tested in clinical trials to determine their efficacy and safety. Another well-known issue is the difficulty in engaging users beyond the first download … [Read more...] about The Future of Digital Mental Health Treatment

America Is Facing a Teen Suicide Pandemic

· September 4, 2020 ·

Six months ago, we could not have imagined that our daily vocabulary would be filled with the p-word. And while perhaps we are getting tired of hearing the word pandemic , I can’t help but ask why we haven’t used it to bring urgency to confronting teen suicide. The race to find a cure to the COVID-19 pandemic certainly is front and center, but that same sense of urgency does not seem to be evident for the unsettling rise in teen suicide. In the United States, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death—with more than 2,000 14- to 18-year-olds dying every year by suicide, and accounting for about one of every three injury-related deaths . That’s the equivalent of losing a large high school’s worth of teenagers to suicide, year after year. These numbers demand our attention . New CDC data reveal that almost one in five teens across the nation have seriously considered attempting suicide. Picture a typical high school classroom of 25 students. About five of those … [Read more...] about America Is Facing a Teen Suicide Pandemic
