HCM City - Strong efforts from the HCM City banking industry are needed to complete its mission in 2017, a high-ranking official has said. Speaking at a conference held yesterday in HCM City, chairman of the city's People's Committee Nguyễn Thành Phong said the "the banking industry for many years has been considered the blood vessel of the economy and one of the most important industries of the city". During the 2011-15 period, the city's banking industry reached an annual growth of 10.1 per cent, ranking second among other sectors in growth. "This year, the city aims to collect VNĐ348 trillion (US$15.5 billion) for the State budget, an increase of 16.6 per cent year-on-year, and an increase of 26 per cent for city collections, " he added. HCM CITY (VNS) — A city official has urged the HCM City Tourism Association (HTA) to carry out measures to raise the city's tourism competitiveness, while industry leaders have asked the government to amend laws related to tourism. Speaking at the association's Congress in HCM City yesterday, Nguyen Thi Hong, the city's deputy chairwoman, said while tourism had been affected by worldwide political and economic insecurity, the city had seen an increase of 10 per cent in the number of foreign tourists and revenue from tourism in the first eight months of the year. She attributed the increase to efforts made by the HTA and the city's Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Hong said the HTA should enhance its role as a bridge connecting travel companies with authorities, and encourage links between tourism and commerce. Hoi An and the UNESCO office in Hanoi plan to develop a tourist card to replace entrance-tickets used to enter the old section of the ancient city. At present, 40% of revenue is lost through the sale of unauthorised tickets. Huong said there is a need to fully explain to the public and tourists that the need for entrance tickets is tied to restoration work. "About 90% of tourists do not know that entrance tickets to the old town and destinations are compulsory, or why," she said. Vice chairman of the municipal People's Committee Truong Van Bay said the plan is to develop a multi-option tourist card from 2015. Many tourism cities around Vietnam have mulled, or are covering the whole areas with free WiFi access, under programs that cost millions of US dollars, but their effectiveness remains to be seen. The network, which includes 300 hotspots and is worth an enormous US$2 million, is expected to be able to simultaneously serve 10,000 local residents and tourists. The race among local cities to become 'Wifi-ed' was in fact ignited by Hoi An, the neighboring city of Da Nang, in 2012. The city, whose old quarter is known to global tourists, become the first city in the Southeast Asian to offer free wifi access last year, under a VND25 billion ($1.2 million) program implemented by the municipal department of information and communications and the VDC3.
