In October 2020, Movement Towards Socialism (MAS) candidate Luis Arce was elected to the presidency with over 50 percent of the vote. His success followed one year of rule by de facto president Jeanine Añez, who assumed power after socialist president Evo Morales, along with other members of his party, were forced to step down, despite winning over 47 percent of the vote in 2019. Morales' exit, which he said was the result of a coup d'état, came amid opposition protests, calls for him to go by the head of the military and claims of electoral fraud made by the Organization of American States (OAS). CITY HALL TO REOPEN TO STAFF As Niagara has moved back into lockdown level red, Thorold council is preparing to bring city staff back to city hall. Coun. John Kenny put forward a motion that “staff return to work, in a completely safe manner.” After setting an unofficial time of three weeks, council voted unanimously in favour of having the chief administrative officer ensure that all city staff return to work in a safe manner with all COVID-19 protocols in place. Members of the public can access city hall still by appointment only. Not that Würzner, the mayor of Heidelberg , is against electric cars . The postcard-perfect city, in southern Germany, gives residents who buy a battery-powered vehicle a bonus of up to 1,000 euros, or $1,200. They get another 1,000 euros if they install a charging station. But electric cars are low on the list of tools that Würzner is using to try to cut Heidelberg’s impact on the climate, an effort that has given the city, home to Germany’s oldest university and an 800-year-old castle ruin, a reputation as a pioneer in environmentally conscious urban planning.
