SARJAPUR Synonymous with technology parks, corporate offices, booming real estate and endless traffic now, Sarjapur was just a cluster of villages offered as a jagir (land grant) to the Wadiyars by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in the 17th century. BL Rice, the former director of the Mysore archaeological department, mentions in the 1887 edition of the Mysore Gazetteer that Sarjapur taluk had a population of 3,017. Before that, in the late 1600s, the Gazetteer states that it was given away as a jagir when the Mughals invaded Bengaluru. Mughal emperor Aurangzeb defeated the Adil Shahis of Bijapur in 1686 and the Qutb Shahis of Golconda in 1687. After that, their only remaining opposition was the Marathas (who controlled Bengaluru then). Mysore maharaja Chikka Devaraja Wadiyar — for his own political and administrative independence — helped the Mughals get an upper hand. In return, they sold Bengaluru to Wadiyar for Rs 3 lakh in 1687. LOCKPORT, IL — The Lockport Township Firefighters Local 1544 recently donated two bleeding control kits to Lockport Township High School. Man misses out on donating to a friend, donates to stranger instead
When an altruistic kidney donor swooped in to save his mate, Richard Spackman decided to pay it forward. Alport Syndrome, a genetic condition affecting kidney function, eyesight and hearing, runs in his friend Jim Scott's family. Scott's sister had a kidney transplant the same day he had a biopsy on his kidneys. His mum is on dialysis and one of his daughters has been diagnosed with the condition. For more than a decade, Scott watched his kidney function drop down, and felt it too. "I started to run out of puff. I couldn't walk from our office to the bank and back. UK will spend £2.4bn on Christmas clothes that barely get worn – survey
Britons are poised to spend £2.4bn on new outfits for the Christmas party season this year – yet many items may be worn fewer than three times – a survey shows. After shelling out an average of £73.90 per person on partywear for the festive period, one in five people admit they won’t wear the same outfit to more than one party or event, according to the study from environmental charity Hubbub. The charity is highlighting the findings as another example of the environmental and financial impact of fast or throwaway fashion, amid growing concerns that the industry is wasting valuable resources and contributing to the climate crisis. With consumers now bombarded with advertising for Christmas partywear, it is urging shoppers to consider second-hand clothing, swapping and even renting outfits rather than only buying brand new. Sarah Divall, project co-ordinator at Hubbub, said: “Vintage and pre-loved clothing has never been so on trend and it’s only … [Read more...] about UK will spend £2.4bn on Christmas clothes that barely get worn – survey

Each year, Dr Charles Platkin of Hunter College NYC Food Policy Centre tucks into the menus on offer by North America’s top carriers to analyse the nutritional value of their meals in the skies. Looking at the options from 11 North American carriers, he can reveal which flights offer the best bites to eat and which ones to pack a sandwich for. There’s good news for Kiwis planning a trip to Vancouver aboard the new Air Canada route. Air Canada and Air Alaska have come out on top as providers of the most nutritional in-flight meals. Meals were scored out of five for nutritional value, and the calorie content was also measured. Air Canada scored 4/5 for its “mini-meals” which are spaced out over two-hour flights. With just 347 calories they are “high in protein” vs. calorie content. Alaska also scored four with an average calorie content of 359. Dr Platkin praised the airline for its healthier options and transparency for listing online its “full … [Read more...] about 2019 airline food ranked: Nutritional value of in-flight meals revealed in study
