Indiana Passes Bill Declaring Religious Services to Be ‘Essential’

· April 14, 2021 ·

The Indiana legislature has passed a bill declaring religious service to be “essential” during a state of emergency and prohibiting the imposition of a “substantial burden” on them without a compelling government interest. “Religious organizations provide essential services that are necessary for the health and welfare of the public during a disaster emergency,” reads Senate Bill 263, which has now passed both the House and the Senate and awaits the governor’s signature into law. The state and its political subdivisions “may not impose restrictions on: (1) the operation of a religious organization or (2) religious services that are more restrictive than the restrictions imposed on other businesses and organizations that provide essential services to the public,” the bill states. The language of the bill echoes prevailing divisions of activities into “essential” and “non-essential” during the coronavirus pandemic both in the U.S. and abroad. How to fix the American diet, according to the man who coined the term “junk food”

· December 28, 2017 ·

The nutrition crusader credited with popularizing the phrase “junk food” looks exactly as one would expect: bespectacled, vaguely professorial – and very, very thin. Michael Jacobson, who retired in September as executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, hasn’t eaten a hot dog or drunk a soda since the 1970s. In the early ’90s, the food industry dubbed him “the great ayatollah” – because of his zealous opposition to soda, Quarter Pounders and sugary cereals. But the foods … [Read more...] about How to fix the American diet, according to the man who coined the term “junk food”
