PCI: Momentum for Local Business Environment Improvement The Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) recently launched the annual Provincial Competitiveness Index Report 2014 (PCI 2014) in Hanoi. This is the 10th edition of PCI Report. The 2014 PCI survey is based on responses from nearly 10,000 domestic private enterprises across 63 provinces in Vietnam. Besides, PCI 2014 has remarks from foreign-invested companies in Vietnam on Vietnamese business environment and remarks of Vietnamese companies on opportunities and challenges from Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and labour relations in companies. You Asked (05-05-2009) Who is eligible to apply for a temporary resident permit? Dear Viet Nam News, I am looking for something to replace the six-month visa that I have to renew. Our international school has 70 foreign teachers under two-year contracts, and it would make life much simpler for us if we could get two-year temporary resident permits rather than renewing all the visas every six months – both in terms of convenience and cost. It was never very simple to get a temporary resident’s permit before, and I am doubtful whether it is as simple as just going to the local police. Any further information would be greatly appreciated. In the framework of the Integrity and Transparency in Business Initiative for Vietnam (ITBI) project, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the General Inspectorate (GI) jointly organised a meeting to announce "Research Findings on Current Status of Corruption in Business Sector in Vietnam" on April 4, 2012. The research confirms that unofficial costs remain a heavy burden on many businesses today. Many "unofficial" items Bribery, party invitation, travel gifts and kickback for contracts approved are some popular forms of unofficial cost incurred by businesses. Research findings showed that 40 percent of surveyed businesses said unofficial costs account for 1 percent of annual expenses; and 13 percent of respondents said unofficial costs took more than 5 percent. And, 80 percent of respondents said corruption originated from unofficial costs leaves negative impacts on the economy development and increase business costs. Dong Xuan Market, or Cho Dong Xuan, is the oldest and largest market in Hanoi. It is located at Dong Xuan Street, at the end of Hang Dao Street, on the northern part of the Old Quarters.
