Allowing defendants to ‘buy’ community service credits may violate law, audit suggests

The former Calcasieu Parish district attorney may have violated state law when he allowed people convicted of minor crimes to buy community service credits with donations to a nonprofit foundation he created, according to an investigative audit by the Louisiana Legislative Auditor's Office. An attorney for the district attorney's office in a Feb. 12 management response disputed the allegations, saying there is no constitutional article or statute prohibiting the practice, but there are attorney general opinions indicating the program is proper. The audit, released Feb. 25, found John DeRosier, between October 2015 and November 2019, transferred $556,598 to the District Attorney's Community Assistance Foundation, a nonprofit he set up and used public employees to administer. DeRosier retired Dec. 31 after 15 years as DA. New seniors services centre to offer integrated support for elderly

SINGAPORE: A new seniors services centre has opened in Taman Jurong. It will deliver programmes aimed at addressing the health problems of the elderly and giving them social support. The centre is set up by Thye Hua Kwan Moral Charities and was opened Deputy Prime Minister, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who is also the Member of Parliament for Jurong Group Representation Constituency. Nearly S$250,000 was spent to refurbish the Thye Hua Kwan Seniors Services Centre, which reaches out to some 1,000 elderly residents living in the area. The centre is also working closely with various government agencies which have co-located their facilities there, said Minister of State for Social and Family Development, Halimah Yacob. Greeks Increase Citizens’ Military Service Amid Increasing Turkish Aggression

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greece will introduce an increase in military service for conscripts serving in the army from nine to 12 months, starting in May, as part of a program to boost the armed forces amid tension with regional rival Turkey. The decision made public Friday will bring army service in line with the length of conscription to the navy and air force. The nine-month term will only remain for army conscripts who volunteer to join special forces services or serve in border areas for their entire term in uniform. 600 Seniors From Hard-Hit Areas, With Limited Access To Resources Vaccinated Against COVID-19 In Huntington Beach

HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA) — Seniors without access to transportation or the technical tools required to sign up for vaccines received their coronavirus shot on Friday as part of a partnership with a hospital and the city of Huntington Beach. “To have that partnership… we were able to do a lot of outreach and connect with these seniors who are maybe not able to get a vaccine as easy as other people,” said Huntington Beach Mayor Kim Carr. About 600 people 65 and older got the vaccine. It was part of an effort across the Southland and state of California to make sure the vaccine is available to every eligible person who wants it, regardless of their income or accessibility to resources. The seniors who received the vaccine on Friday came from the Oakview community, which is one of the hardest-hit areas of Orange County.
