Jeremy Corbyn has written to the prime minister urging him to take personal charge of the government’s response to “devastating” flooding, as residents began a clean-up operation, and warned further damage was likely unless existing water was pumped away. On Monday, the Environment Agency had five severe “danger to life” flood warnings in place, all in and around Doncaster, as well as 39 flood warnings across the country. Last week the River Don burst its banks, leaving houses inundated by floodwater and forcing residents out of their homes. In a letter to Boris Johnson, Corbyn said: “If this had happened in Surrey, not Yorkshire or the east Midlands, it seems far more likely that a national emergency would have been declared.” The Labour leader said Johnson should convene the Cobra committee, through which the government coordinates its handling of emergencies. He called for the government to ensure “every resource is being utilised to … [Read more...] about Corbyn asks Johnson to take charge of response to Yorkshire flooding

A woman whose home and business have been destroyed by floods in South Yorkshire has revealed that she has lost everything she has worked for because her insurance did not cover flooding. Pam Webb, owner of Truffle Lodge luxury spa in Fishlake, near Doncaster, broke down in tears as she said she discovered on Monday morning that her insurance provider had excluded flooding from her policy - despite the floods being the first the village has experienced in 100 years. Ms Webb said she wanted answers about what caused the flooding that resulted in around 350 residents leaving their homes after they were inundated by water. Aerial photographs today show the devastation caused by the floods in the Yorkshire village, as cars were swept away and homes were left knee deep in filthy water. The now cut-off village of Fishlake is submerged underwater after the River Don burst its banks following torrential downpours. Around half of the 700 residents have left their homes, and those that … [Read more...] about ‘I’ve lost my home, my business, everything’: Woman’s tears as floods inundate her spa in submerged Yorkshire town – and insurers says they will NOT cover her for the damage
Villagers forced to evacuate their homes amid killer floods say they feel abandoned by the government after being hit with their third “once-in-a-lifetime” deluge in 20 years. Hundreds had to flee as further rainfall threatens homes and farms already hit by torrential downpours last week. Cars were swept into ditches, homes were flooded up to their windowsills and farmers battled to save their livestock in the South Yorkshire village of Fishlake after the river Don burst its banks. One resident said: “We feel this area has been sacrificed.” Most of the 700 residents were told to leave and the Environment Agency called for help from the RAF, which sent a chinook to shore up flood defences. Five severe “threat to life” warnings were issued on the River Don. The Met Office forecast up to 60mm rainfall for the battered region on Thursday. A month’s worth is usually 89mm. Fishlake resident Greg Mawson said: “It was 58mm that caused this now, … [Read more...] about Villagers hit by third ‘once in a lifetime flood’ feel ‘abandoned’ by government
When the ravages of climate change seem heartbreaking; when the parade of plants and animals suffering from the effects of human activity seems endless, what are we to do? How do we resist the paralyzing forces of "eco-grief," as author Colby Devitt calls it? How do we sustain hope? Better yet, how do we do something concrete and immediate that will make a difference? One answer: plant a garden. Wherever you live, however much space you have, inside or out, in a backyard, side yard or front yard, get a handful of seeds, put them in dirt in a place where they receive at least some sun. Water. Watch. Wait. Wonder. And eventually, eat. Why? The obvious answer is that we save fossil fuel pollution when we consume foods that do not require refrigerated transportation, plastic packaging, or processing other than our own cleaning, cooking, and storing. These moves matter. Yet, I’m a philosopher who looks at how the bodily movements we make open new possibilities of thinking, feeling, … [Read more...] about Devastated about Climate Change?
