Pressed by Trump, US pushed unproven coronavirus treatment guidance

· April 5, 2020 ·

WASHINGTON: In mid-March, President Donald Trump personally pressed federal health officials to make malaria drugs available to treat the novel coronavirus, though they had been untested for COVID-19, two sources told Reuters. Shortly afterward, the federal government published highly unusual guidance informing doctors they had the option to prescribe the drugs, with key dosing information based on unattributed anecdotes rather than peer-reviewed science. While Trump, in a series of tweets and press comments, had made his opinions on the drugs, chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, well known, the nature of his behind-the-scenes intervention has not been previously reported. The guidance, published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has received scant notice outside medical circles. The episode reveals how the president’s efforts could change the nature of drug oversight, a field long governed by strict rules of science and testing. Rarely, if ever, has a … [Read more...] about Pressed by Trump, US pushed unproven coronavirus treatment guidance

Trump aims to ease US oil industry’s cash crunch, no plan to trim output

· April 3, 2020 ·

REUTERS: US President Donald Trump has directed his cabinet to find ways to ease a cash crunch in the drilling industry after oil company executives told him in a Friday (Apr 3) meeting it was among their top concerns, according to three sources briefed on the matter. Trump hosted the White House meeting with executives from Exxon Mobil, Chevron Corp, Continental Resources and others as his government seeks to contain the fallout from an historic slump in oil prices that has threatened the industry with bankruptcies and layoffs. Oil prices have dropped by about two-thirds this year as the coronavirus outbreak crushes fuel demand and major producers Saudi Arabia and Russia engage in a price war. US Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette told a broad industry conference call following Trump's meeting with the oil executives that Trump had directed him to work with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to look for ways to immediately fix the energy industry's "liquidity shock", according to … [Read more...] about Trump aims to ease US oil industry’s cash crunch, no plan to trim output

Trump says 3M ‘will have a big price to pay’ over face masks

· April 3, 2020 ·

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump slammed 3M Co in a tweet late on Thursday (Apr 3) after earlier announcing he was invoking the Defense Production Act to get the company to produce face masks. "We hit 3M hard today after seeing what they were doing with their Masks. 'P Act' all the way.' Big surprise to many in government as to what they were doing - will have a big price to pay!" Trump said on Twitter. At a White House briefing on the coronavirus pandemic earlier on Thursday, Trump announced he had signed a Defense Production Act order for 3M to produce face masks. "Hopefully they'll be able to do what they are supposed to do," he said, without elaborating. St Paul, Minnesota-based 3M did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The company's brands include Scotch, Post-It and Nexcare, as well as healthcare products for professionals. White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said at the briefing, "We've had some issues making sure that all of the production that 3M … [Read more...] about Trump says 3M ‘will have a big price to pay’ over face masks

Trump holds call with US internet, mobile phone providers

· April 1, 2020 ·

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump spoke with the biggest U.S. internet and mobile phone providers on Tuesday to talk about how the networks are holding up as tens of millions of Americans work from home. The Federal Communications Commission has said U.S. networks are performing well and has granted temporary access to additional spectrum blocks to help providers manage traffic. The chief executives of AT&T Inc, Verizon Communications Inc, Charter Communications Inc, Comcast, Altice USA, LionTree and Sprint Corp took part in the call, as did the incoming chief executive of T-Mobile US Inc and chairman of Liberty Media. The White House said Trump thanked the firms "for not only rising to the increased demand, but extending services to all Americans at no additional cost and for waiving bills and late fees for those experiencing financial hardship." FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr said last week "the data show that the recent surges in Internet traffic are well within the … [Read more...] about Trump holds call with US internet, mobile phone providers
