Facebook COO asks Vietnamese students to fight for greater female leadership

· March 7, 2021 ·

Sandberg stressed that the bias was global, true in every country in the world. "It's true in Vietnam, it's true in the United States," she said, adding that the word "bossy" was four and a half times more likely to be said to a girl. Women are often told they're too aggressive, she noted. Everyone laughs because it's funny for a little girl to have executive leadership skills, but a little boy said to have the same skills is taken seriously. "There's a cultural stereotype against female leadership that we haven't fixed yet," she said at the conference with Fulbright University students Friday. Sandberg noted that women are still doing the caregiving and they need much time to do it. She said female students should not do "your boyfriend's laundry" to be considered a "cute girlfriend." "You will be doing that dude's laundry for the next three decades and you will not have the career he will." Remarkably, the perception about women's role was getting better but painfully … [Read more...] about Facebook COO asks Vietnamese students to fight for greater female leadership

Our Views: Is LSU a football team or a university? Its leaders get it wrong, over and over again

· March 7, 2021 ·

When Louisianans ask what’s going on with LSU, they often mean what’s happening with the football team. But there is more to LSU than football. There is a sprawling archipelago of schools and programs and departments up the hill from Tiger Stadium. They are charged with teaching marketable skills to our young people and — more critically — protecting them as freshly minted adults away from home for the first time. Rabalais: LSU's Title IX failures are tragic — and it's possible LSU still hasn't done enough The most shocking thing about the 150-page Husch Blackwell report released Friday is that the people who run LSU seem to also see the school chiefly as a football program, inconveniently appended to a university. So when given the choice about whether to protect their students, young women who came to Baton Rouge from Mandeville or Minden or Manchac to study and compete and spread their wings, the grandees who run the place made the wrong decision, to protect the … [Read more...] about Our Views: Is LSU a football team or a university? Joaquin Bernas, 88: Jesuit priest, eminent constitutionalist

· March 7, 2021 ·

Fr. Joaquin Bernas INQUIRER FILE PHOTO MANILA, Philippines — Joaquin Bernas, the Jesuit priest who helped draft the Constitution after the 1986 Edsa People Power Revolution, died early Saturday morning due to serious heart ailments, leaving behind a legacy of helping the country return to democracy and serving as a beacon of idealism for aspiring lawyers. He was 88. “He was a giant,” Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. said of the country’s most eminent constitutionalist, who was often called upon by the Supreme Court, political leaders, opinion makers, and journalists to help interpret the intention of the framers of the 1987 Constitution whenever its provisions were being challenged. “Fr. Bernas was a pillar of constitutional law not only in Ateneo Law School but also in our country,” Ateneo de Manila University said in announcing his passing. In a separate statement, Ateneo Law School said: “We take solace in the knowledge that this was an earthly life filled with meaning … [Read more...] about Joaquin Bernas, 88: Jesuit priest, eminent constitutionalist

A comprehensive gender and health education for youth in BARMM

· March 6, 2021 ·

On February 24, almost two weeks ago, the Commission on Population (Popcom), particularly its Region 12 (Soccsksargen) and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Interim Office, virtually launched the Comprehensive Gender and Health Education for Youth (Cghey) instructional modules that are intended for Moro teachers of grade school and high school students in BARMM. I learned that it took three long and arduous years for the 12 authors (three Popcom staff and four female and five male Muslim religious leaders) to write the 152-page Cghey that has five main modules on critical adolescent development particularly 1) anatomy and physiology with topics on human anatomy, stages of life, puberty, fertility awareness and early pregnancy; 2) gender and development, which covers GAD (gender and development) concepts, gender equality and equity, marriage and emerging gender issues; 3) health and nutrition, which include healthy lifestyle, sexually transmitted infections and … [Read more...] about A comprehensive gender and health education for youth in BARMM
