SINGAPORE: By almost any measure, China leads the world in road transport electrification. It makes more, buys more and, with 75 different models available in 2017, offers consumers a wider choice of electric vehicles (EVs) than any other country. Elsewhere in Asia, Singapore launched its first electric vehicle sharing service in December 2017 with 80 cars and 30 charging stations. By 2020, the goal is to have 1,000 of such green cars, along with 500 charging locations offering 2,000 charging points – making BlueSG the second-largest electric-car sharing programme in the world. The service was launched by BlueSG, a subsidiary of France’s Bolloré Group that runs the world’s largest electric car sharing service Autolib in Paris. It’s easy to get carried away with the hype surrounding electric vehicles (EVs). But while sales of battery-powered cars may be surging, the technology is still in its infancy and batteries are by no means the only low-carbon solution for global … [Read more...] about Commentary: Electric vehicles have a long way to go, so don’t write off oil yet

Policies will continue to be adjusted to support the energy sector: Chan Chun Sing
SINGAPORE: The Government will not shy away from making tweaks and adjustments to policies if needed to support Singapore's energy sector, given the changes in the global energy landscape, said Trade and Industry Minister Chan Chun Sing in an interview with Channel NewsAsia. “We will continually tweak our policies to encourage more innovation, to encourage more competition so we can have more affordable and more varied options for our consumers,” he said. “Because we are prepared to test out new rules and regulations to enable innovation to take place, our rules and regulations are not just regressive or defensive in trying to prevent bad things from happening,” he added. This way, Singapore will be able to present itself as an attractive platform for energy professionals and leading energy firms worldwide to test bed their ideas, which will in turn generate opportunities for Singapore companies and workers too. “We will attract many more researchers to come to Singapore, to … [Read more...] about Policies will continue to be adjusted to support the energy sector: Chan Chun Sing
Water, Organic Matter on Asteroid Grain Offer Glimpse into Evolution Path Similar to Ancient Earth’s
Scientists have discovered water and organic matter on the surface of a tiny asteroid sample, collected from the solar system. The single grain hails from the celestial rock dubbed ‘Itokawa’ and was retrieved by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s (Jaxa) first Hayabusa mission in 2010. #OTD in 2010, the Hayabusa asteroid explorer re-entered Earth's atmosphere with samples from the asteroid Itokawa. pic.twitter.com/erGsTxpHtp — NASA History Office (@NASAhistory) June 13, 2016 “The Hayabusa mission was a robotic spacecraft developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency to return samples from a small near-Earth asteroid named Itokawa, for detailed analysis in laboratories on Earth”, Dr Queenie Chan from the Department of Earth Sciences at Royal Holloway, said in a statement. The asteroid in question is designated a near-Earth object of the Apollo group – a potentially hazardous asteroid. It was first discovered by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research … [Read more...] about Water, Organic Matter on Asteroid Grain Offer Glimpse into Evolution Path Similar to Ancient Earth’s
Spotting UFOs: Do-it-yourself sky surveillance comes online
If you are perplexed, befuddled and bewildered about reports of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) and possible visitations of alien spacecraft, you can take action with do-it-yourself sky-monitoring gear. Given the low cost and high capability of today's consumer-grade technology, you too can be at the ready to document out-of-the-ordinary events. Enter the world of Sky Hub, a global network of smart sensors designed to snag digital signatures of anomalous events. This crowd-sourced network of smart trackers with "edge processing" uploads data of unusual phenomena to a Sky Hub Cloud. The driving forces empowering the Sky Hub initiative center on the rapid growth and evolution of machine learning for streamlining the analysis of large datasets and the increasing affordability of artificial intelligence (AI)-ready hardware. These advancements can be harnessed to probe the ongoing, baffling behavior of UAP and unidentified flying objects (UFOs) reportedly crisscrossing … [Read more...] about Spotting UFOs: Do-it-yourself sky surveillance comes online
2022 Mercedes EQS Reveals Swoopy Profile In New Teaser Image
The brand's first car to be developed from the ground up as an EV is shaping up quite nicely. Mercedes must be getting closer to the world premiere of its hotly anticipated EQS because the three-pointed star is intensifying its teaser campaign. It was only on Tuesday when the German luxury brand dropped a smartphone-friendly video shot in portrait mode previewing the screen-heavy interior and now we're being given a closer look at the exterior. Thankfully, the camouflage is all gone now. This still qualifies as a teaser image because Mercedes deliberately lowered the brightness. However, we fiddled with the photo's settings and bumped up the exposure and brightness in our quest to unlock more design details. Having launched the stunning first-generation CLS in 2004 after a preview a year earlier with the Vision CLS concept, the Stuttgart-based squad sure knows how to infuse some coupe cues in a sedan's roofline.
