National television festival wraps up The 34th National Television Festival wrapped up in Hue on Saturday, ending four days of film screenings, workshops and competitions. The judges awarded prizes to nearly half of the 513 entries submitted for consideration at the festival. Tran Binh Minh, general director of Viet Nam Television and chairman of the festival organisers, said the entries reflected many aspects of life in the country and were produced using new technology. However, he added that many of them were not creative enough and he expected a breakthrough at next year's festival in Quang Binh Province. The award winners covered the protection of Vietnamese sovereignty over the Paracel (Hoang Sa) and Spratly (Truong Sa) achipelagoes; and environmental protection at a time of rising pollution and illegal deforestation. Hanoi launches World heritage discovery competition A competition on world heritage discovery in Hanoi officially opened on November 6. Chinese workers in Vietnam invited to protest illegal oil drill Around 400 workers from the northern province of Thai Binh made a motorbike trip to Haiphong City, in a bid to urge Chinese workers to oppose the illegal oil rig in Vietnamese waters. As the workers' protest progressed on May 14 many others from Chinese-invested factories in Vinh Bao, Tien Lang, Kien Anh and Duong Kinh districts in Haiphong City joined in. The Vietnamese workers hoped to convince Chinese who work and live in Vietnam to ask that their government discontinue the illegal drilling in the East Sea. According to all accounts, the demonstration remained civil and non-violent. Do Manh Hieu, Chairman of the Haiphong City Trade Union, said that municipal authorities requested workers participate in the protest in a law-abiding manner.
