Watching the World Cup Final: Of Loss and Longing

· July 11, 2010 ·

Hua's note: The end of the World Cup is upon us. Perhaps it's finally time to get back to work on that long-overdue manuscript, or house-train the dog, or take up swimming. Or maybe the World Cup has only whetted your appetite for the resumption of club football, with its promise of splashy new transfers, Bruce Lee-like teenage forwards learning to speak Dutch, miserably cold, early-Saturday trips to the bar to watch your team battle Grimsby Town in some inconsequential cup. We know Snoop is excited. A far less world-uniting version of global soccer, but the one that awaits. In the meantime, guest blogger Pete L'Official offers his thoughts on how to enjoy those last few minutes, and how to cope with those impending feelings of loss. By the end of today's match, either Spain or the Netherlands will win the World Cup for the first time. The other will be devastated. Some might move on, downplaying the result as the loss of a mere trophy, one that isn't even as valuable as its replica. … [Read more...] about Watching the World Cup Final: Of Loss and Longing

Dual Olympic champion Ester Ledecka wins first World Cup skiing race

· December 7, 2019 ·

(CNN) She stunned the world with gold medals in two different sports at the Winter Olympics, but now Ester Ledecka has clinched her first World Cup ski racing title. The 24-year-old snowboarder and skier from the Czech Republic stormed to victory in a downhill at Lake Louise, Canada for her first skiing victory since Pyeongchang in 2018. At the Olympics, Ledecka pulled off a shock victory in the super-G skiing event before clinching gold in her favoured snowboarding parallel giant slalom to become the first athlete to win gold in two different disciplines at the same Games. In scenes reminiscent of her Olympic super-G victory, Ledecka set the fastest time from starting number 26 and shocked even herself to see the first place posted on the scoreboard. She beat Swiss Corinne Suter by 0.35 seconds with Austrian Stephanie Venier third in Canada. "I was a little bit thinking it was some mistake, but it's OK. I'm maybe getting used to it," Ledecka said. Ester Ledecka won a World Cup … [Read more...] about Dual Olympic champion Ester Ledecka wins first World Cup skiing race

I struggled to hold back my tears when MS Dhoni got out in World Cup semis: Yuzvendra Chahal

· September 28, 2019 ·

NEW DELHI: The World Cup semifinal loss to New Zealand in July still fresh in his mind, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal said he struggled to hold back his tears when Mahendra Singh Dhoni got out in that match at Old Trafford. Chasing 240, Chahal walked into bat after Dhoni fell in the 49th over against New Zealand in the rain-affected semi-final which India lost by 18 runs. Dhoni stitched a 116-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja to get India close after they were tottering at 92 for 6 at one stage. But Dhoni's dismissal, run out on 50, crushed India's hopes of reaching the final. "It was my first World Cup and when Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) got out and I was going in (to bat), I was trying to hold back my tears. It was so depressing," Chahal said at an event. "We played so well for nine games but suddenly we were going out of the tournament. Rain wasn't in our hands and so it won't be right to say anything (about the interruption). It was the first time that we really wanted to go back to … [Read more...] about I struggled to hold back my tears when MS Dhoni got out in World Cup semis: Yuzvendra Chahal

ICC World Cup 2019: Ravindra Jadeja making it count as supersub

· July 5, 2019 ·

LEEDS: Ravindra Jadeja featured in every game India played in the 2015 World Cup - a total of eight. At the 2019 edition, he remains the only one from the original squad of 15 yet to figure in a single match. WORLD CUP SCHEDULE | POINTS TABLE Times have changed and so have the priorities and the requirements of the team. Despite bringing much to the table with his all-round abilities, Jadeja doesn't seem to fit into the team equation even as the tournament reaches its closure. Jadeja's stunning catch to dismiss Jason Roy at Edgbaston was a reminder of his fielding brilliance. He has contributed to the team's cause whenever he has been called upon as a substitute fielder in this World Cup. Whether in the ring or outside it, he is a delight to watch and a constant threat to the batsmen. Jadeja would have liked to be in that list captains exchange before every game. But his wish seems destined to remain unfulfilled. Chastened by the experience against England, India dropped a … [Read more...] about ICC World Cup 2019: Ravindra Jadeja making it count as supersub
