Export difficulties Domestic textile and garment enterprises have been working hard to obtain orders, but the resulting number has fallen short of their production capacity. The Hung Yen Garment Corporation is no exception. Management Board Chairman Nguyen Xuan Duong said that in previous years, between January and June, sufficient orders were received for production until the end of the year, whereas in the same period of 2016, many subsidiaries of the corporation didn’t even receive enough orders for production to last them until the fall. While scrambling for additional orders to maintain production, manufacturers were dealt an additional blow: outsourcing prices fell 10-20 percent compared to 2015. According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the outsourcing price drop stems from a shifting of large, simple outsourcing orders to Bangladesh and Cambodia, where labor costs are lower than in Vietnam. Meanwhile, the demand for textiles and garments in such major markets as … [Read more...] about Textile and garment sector needs mending

The rate of extreme non-compliance in Việt Nam, which means wageworkers are paid less than four-fifths of the minimum wage in the country, is 3.8 per cent and moderate non-compliance (workers paid between 80 per cent and less than 100 per cent of the minimum wage) is 2.8 per cent. Garment sector strives for preset target
The Viet Nam Textile & Apparel Association (VITAS) reported that in January-June, overseas shipment of the garment sector hit over US$ 12 billion, up 4.72% against the same period last year, meeting 41% of the preset goal. This was the six-month period the domestic garment sector got the worst growth rate over the last ten years, said Nguyen Xuan Duong, the Vice President of VITAS. Mr. Duong attributed the situation to unstable foreign currency exchange rate (without market mechanisms), increasing minimum wage floor, and rising lending interest rates to the drop in export revenue. According to VITAS President Vu Duc Giang, as Viet Nam has yet signed a free trade agreement with Turkey, made-in-Viet Nam products were imposed protective measures. The Britain’s exit from the EU also immediately impacted Viet Nam as a large number of Vietnamese enterprises lost orders and British investors planned to sell their factories in Viet Nam, Mr. Giang said. Up to now, numerous garment … [Read more...] about Garment sector strives for preset target
