Thailand Gets Tough on Google, Facebook and Twitter

· September 25, 2020 ·

The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society on Thursday ordered police to prosecute Google, Facebook and Twitter for failing to remove illegal posts in Thailand. The Minister is also targeting social media users who posted or shared messages deemed offensive the Monarchy. Buddhipongse Punnakanta, minister of digital economy and society, filed the complaint at the Royal Thai Police’s Technology Crime Suppression Division. He said his ministry had sent warning letters to the operators of Facebook, Google and Twitter ordering them to block illegal information within 15 days. However the media giants did not fully cooperate. He said the warnings attached with relevant court orders targeted 661 links on Facebook. Only 225 of the links were removed by Facebook. The ministry did the same for 69 links on Twitter and five of them were removed. Meanwhile, 289 links on Googles YouTube were completely blocked by Wednesday. “It is the first time in Thailand that the (computer crime) law … [Read more...] about Thailand Gets Tough on Google, Facebook and Twitter

Google under federal investigation over firing of four employees

· December 9, 2019 ·

The US National Labor Relations Board said Monday it has opened a probe into Google over its labor practices, a week after a complaint against the search giant was filed on behalf of four employees fired before Thanksgiving. The complaint, filed Dec. 5, accuses Google of "unlawful conduct" in the terminations of the workers -- Laurence Berland, Rebecca Rivers, Sophie Waldman and Paul Duke -- who had spoken out against working conditions at Google. The charge was filed by the Communications Workers of America , a labor union founded in 1938. CNBC earlier reported the investigation had begun. Google's "actions are the antithesis of the freedoms and transparency it publicly touts," the complaint reads. The search giant last month said it fired four employees for violations related to data security. The terminations came just days after approximately 200 Google workers and other supporters held a rally outside one of Google's San Francisco offices. The activists at the rally … [Read more...] about Google under federal investigation over firing of four employees

Google is a search monopoly, Justice Department says in landmark antitrust lawsuit

· October 21, 2020 ·

The US Department of Justice on Tuesday filed a landmark lawsuit against Google that accuses the tech giant of illegally holding monopolies in search and search advertising, the culmination of a more than yearlong investigation into alleged anticompetitive practices at the company, and the first such antitrust case in the tech world in decades. The federal government alleges that Google violated antitrust laws to act as a "gatekeeper" to the internet. The complaint says the company unlawfully blocked out competitors by reaching deals with phone makers including Apple and Samsung to be the preset, default search engine on devices. Google also abused the dominance of its Android operating system to strong-arm manufacturers to preload Google's apps onto phones, the lawsuit alleges. Editor’s desk: WWDC 2012 and iOS 6, Google Drive, Google and Facebook apps, iCloud guide, and more

· April 30, 2012 ·

June 11. That's the date we've long suspected but just this week had confirmed. Apple's 2012 World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) is now official hurtling towards us (or us towards it). But it's not the only things going on this week, so let's get to it. WWDC 2012 and iOS 6 Apple announced WWDC 2012 at 5:30am Cupertino, California (PDT) time, less than 50 days before the June 11 start date, with a $1600 ticket price, and it still sold out in 2 hours . Many developers and interested parties had created scripts that would look for any change in Apple's WWDC website and alert them immediately. Others signed up for text message notification services. Still others networked with friends, family, peers, and others to keep constant vigil and light the web on fire the moment tickets went live. Some got them, some didn't. No one seemed thrilled with the process. Probably not even at Apple. The list of problems are easy to identify -- too much demand, not enough … [Read more...] about Editor’s desk: WWDC 2012 and iOS 6, Google Drive, Google and Facebook apps, iCloud guide, and more

Facebook gives Slingshot a second try with some familiar features

· December 5, 2014 ·

Images your friends can view for 24 hours. Photo filters. Looping videos. Facebook’s ephemeral photo-messaging app Slingshot is taking a few familiar features from other well-loved services (Snapchat, Instagram, Vine) to boost its appeal. Slingshot wasn’t exactly catching on with anyone with its send-to-view approach to messaging. Version 2.0 is a complete revamp: Instead of a private messaging premise that requires you to send (or “sling”) a shot to a friend before you can open the message they sent you (which was so annoying ), Slingshot now lets you take a snap of your day that everyone can see for 24 hours. The makeover has been compared to Snapchat Stories, a similar approach that’s been incredibly popular with users and brands. You can still send a private message by replying or reacting to a story, but Slingshot’s emphasis is no longer on individual conversations. The relaunch is designed to gin up new users—while Slingshot attracted interest from early adopters and the … [Read more...] about Facebook gives Slingshot a second try with some familiar features
