Game Of Thrones author George RR Martin can’t build castle library in New Mexico

· September 11, 2020 ·

Game Of Thrones author George RR Martin won't be able to build a seven-sided, castle-style library at his compound in Santa Fe that drew objections from neighbours. The city's Historic Districts Review Board on Tuesday (Sep 8) denied a request to allow Martin to exceed the building height limit in the historic district where he lives, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported. The project included a roof deck and an elevator tower. "It is a medieval castle, and I don't understand how we could possibly approve it in this style," board member Frank Katz said. Mark Graham lives south of the property and said residents couldn't "support having a castle in the neighbourhood." "With the notoriety of Mr Martin and Game Of Thrones, we absolutely fear that our neighbourhood will become the next treasure hunt, that his fans will be looking to find the castle that's in the middle of Santa Fe," Graham said. Officials also denied a similar proposal early this year, saying the project didn't … [Read more...] about Game Of Thrones author George RR Martin can’t build castle library in New Mexico

TikTok removing graphic clip circulating on its platform

· September 8, 2020 ·

NEW YORK: Popular short-video app TikTok said on Monday (Sep 7) it was removing a clip of a suicide circulating on its platform and was banning accounts that were repeatedly trying to upload the clip. TikTok did not specify the video, but at least two media reports said that videos of a man shooting himself with a gun had been circulating on TikTok since Sunday night. "We're aware that clips of a suicide that was livestreamed on Facebook have recently circulated on other platforms, including TikTok. Our systems have been automatically detecting and flagging these clips for violating our Community Guidelines," TikTok said on Twitter. TikTok did not immediately respond to a Reuters request to specify the video clip that it removed. Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment. TikTok, whose China-based owner Bytedance has been ordered by President Donald Trump to sell its US operations, has been criticised for its content moderation policy in the past, … [Read more...] about TikTok removing graphic clip circulating on its platform

Thousands of historical records from Hokkien community to be made publicly available

· February 28, 2021 ·

SINGAPORE - Historical records bearing the imprint of Singapore's early Hokkien pioneers such as Tan Tock Seng and Tan Lark Sye will soon be made accessible to the public following the donation of more than 4,300 original documents from the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan (SHHK) made to the National Library Board (NLB) on Sunday (Feb 28). To symbolise the handover of the documents, a set of two original land sales records, one of which bears the original signature of  Tan Tock Seng, one of SHHK's founding leaders, was presented to NLB chief executive Ng Cher Pong at the SHHK Cultural Academy in Sennett Road. The document, dated 1838, was given when the Hokkien philanthropist bought land to build the Thian Hock Keng Temple - Singapore's oldest Hokkien temple, which was completed in 1842. An accompanying land sales record, dating back to 1828, also documents how the land on which the temple sits was originally owned by the British East India Company. These materials, passed on to … [Read more...] about Thousands of historical records from Hokkien community to be made publicly available

Alphabet’s YouTube to launch TikTok-like product

· September 15, 2020 ·

NEW YORK: Alphabet Inc's YouTube is rolling out its version of social media rival TikTok, a new short-form video service called Shorts, enabled within its video-sharing platform. YouTube will first test the feature in India over the next few days and then expand to more countries in the coming months, it said in a blog post on Monday. YouTube's new product, which will compete with Facebook Inc's Reels and TikTok, will let users record short mobile-friendly vertical videos and then add special effects and soundtracks pulled from a music library. The announcement also comes as Oracle Corp and China's ByteDance team up to keep TikTok operating in the United States, beating Microsoft Corp in a deal structured as a partnership rather than an outright sale. YouTube's entry into the short-form video service space coincides with TikTok's ban in one of its biggest market, India, following the country's escalating tensions with China. … [Read more...] about Alphabet’s YouTube to launch TikTok-like product

AstraZeneca shares rise as UK coronavirus vaccine trial resumes

· September 14, 2020 ·

REUTERS: Shares of AstraZeneca rose 1per cent to 8,516 pence on Monday after the British drugmaker received the go-ahead from safety watchdogs over the weekend to resume clinical trials for its COVID-19 vaccine candidate in the United Kingdom. The resumption of the trials for the vaccine, one of the most advanced in development and regarded by governments and financial markets as one of the best bets to tackle the health crisis in the months ahead, buoyed stock markets around the world. The late-stage trials of the vaccine were suspended last week after an illness in a study participant, casting doubts on an early rollout and sending the London-listed company's shares lower. Global trials of the vaccine had also been paused following the UK suspension. Brazil has approved restarting the trials and the Serum Institute of India is awaiting permission from the Drugs Controller General of India. Cambridge-based AstraZeneca's shares had risen about 11per cent this year up to their … [Read more...] about AstraZeneca shares rise as UK coronavirus vaccine trial resumes
