Teaching my family how to recycle correctly has not been easy. When it’s time to empty the recycling bin, more often than not I have to go through the discarded plastics to look for a number of different items that can’t be recycled. The biggest culprit is potato chip bags. While it’s easy to call out others for their repeated mistakes, I too am an offender. Until recently I never knew that single-use/disposable plastic plates and cups could not be recycled. I learned this when the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) sent out an e-blast with a list of items that should not be tossed in the recycle bin. Common single-use plastics (SUP) items you should not put in your household recycling bin: Plastic Utensils Straws/Coffee Stirrers Coffee Pods (if you use pods, be sure to get the kind with the biodegradable mesh bottoms) Chip bags, candy bar wrappers and other snack packaging and wrappers Cling wrap Plastic bags Styrofoam Single-use/disposable plastic … [Read more...] about Recycle Right NY!

Twitter photo By Darla Shelden OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – Oklahoma City neighborhoods have received the delivery of approximately 75,000 new, large recycling carts. But the carts are not to be used until July. Since delivery of the new, larger recycling carts began on February 26, crews have dropped off about 2,500-3,000 per day. The City aims to complete delivery all of the new 190,000-plus carts by May 31. “We’re thrilled with the enthusiasm these new carts are receiving,” says Jim Linn, the City’s solid waste superintendent. “From emails to phone calls and all over social media, the program is already … [Read more...] about OKC new green recycle carts arrive – but don’t use until July
Today living the green life is much more than just recycling metal cans and paper. It's the revolution against the water bottle.Did you know?o Nearly $11 Billion worth of bottle water ends in landfills, which may never be broken down? o Only 1 of these 5 bottles ends up being recycled? The rest end up in our landfills or worse yet clogging up our lakes, rivers, and fields. o 20 Billion single bottles will end up in these landfills o It can take up to 1,000 years for a bottle to bio-degrade o It takes 1.5 million barrels of oil (more then what fuels 100,000 cars per year) just to meet the US demand for water. Fill up a water bottle with 1/3 oil and you can see what was used just to make the bottle you are holding. o It costs more money to drink bottle water than to put gas in your car - up to five times more, because of the energy, packaging and transportation costs. (Source: Earth Policy Institute) o We drink over 65 million bottles of water in Toronto alone!A company called I.A.M. … [Read more...] about Ingenuity in Green Recycling – 5 Things You Can Do Today to Take Control

The fight for the planet is on. It is now fully proven, undeniably, evident that the earth is fighting for its life. During its short but deadly lifespan, human civilization has managed to place a devastating strain on the planet's resources and health. It is now our duty to reverse this ill effect, even though it may be too late. There are thousands of ways people can contribute to the cause: from taking on older techniques such as recycling paper to utilizing newer technologies like fuel-efficient cars. I'd like to concentrate on one specific way through which people can help the planet- recycling computer equipment.Throwing away used networking hardware, monitors, hard drives, routers, RAM, webcams, batteries or anything of the like can have a devastating effect if the equipment ends up in our landfills. From nysscpa.org: Most of the environmental concerns with computers lie with the monitor, specifically its cathode ray tube (CRT). Each color monitor contains, on average, four to … [Read more...] about Be Green – Recycle Your Old Computer Hardware
