Dozens of guests fled from a HCM City hotel in terror on January 5 morning after a mobile phone exploded and caused fire. At 6:45am, local residents discovered that black smoke was pouring out of a second-floor window of Van An 2 Hotel on Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street. The manager ran to each room to inform the guests. Many guests left their belongings behind in order to escape the hotel quickly. Van An 2 Hotel Guests run to the street Hotel staff tried to put out the fire to no avail. Six fire trucks and 32 fire fighters were sent to the site later and put the fire under control in 30 minutes. No one was hurt but the fire destroyed most of the guests' belongings. HCM City hotel supply to rise by 2 per cent
Ho Chi Minh City. — File Photo HCM CITY (VNS) — The supply of three- to five-star hotel rooms in HCM City is expected to rise 2 per cent this year with a four-star property set to begin operations later this year, according to Savills Vietnam. The consulting firm's associate director for residential services, Truong An Duong, said the new hotel with 100 rooms will increase the total room number to 12,800. He told participants at a recent seminar on the city property market development that in the second quarter a new three-star hotel opened with 85 rooms. A renovated hotel with 86 rooms resumed operations while another with 61 rooms closed temporarily for upgrades. The average occupancy in the second quarter, the low tourist season, was 61 per cent, down 13 percentage points from the previous quarter but unchanged from the same period in 2013. Tourism decline hits HCM City hotel market
A slump in tourism has hit Ho Chi Minh City's hotel market, which saw a drop in the average rate of reserved rooms in the first six months of the year compared to the previous five years.In its recent report, Savills Vietnam, which provides comprehensive property services, said the hotel market had seen the lowest average room rate in the last five years due to a continuous increase in supply and fierce competition in the market. For the second quarter of the year, the average room rate dropped 5 percent compared to the first quarter and 3 percent year-on-year to 1.6 million VND (78 USSD) per room per night. According to the report, the city in the second quarter added 540 rooms in the three-star segment with six new and one refurbished hotels. The five-star segment had 446 additional rooms from an existing hotel and an upgraded hotel. With HCM City attracting an increasing number of well-heeled foreign tourists, many luxury hotels are planning to upgrade their facilities and improve human resources. The number of affluent visitors is on the rise thanks to the construction of the trans-Asia highway, upgrading of many border gates in the Mekong Delta and southeastern region, and the efficiency of the tourism industry's marketing of caravan tours. However, the director of the city's Department of Tourism Dong Thi Kim Vui, has warned about the serious shortage of high-class rooms, pointing out that many tourists canceled their visits because of the unavailability of luxurious rooms.
