The Tham Luong-Ben Cat-Nuoc Len Canal is a waterway route in the city, the HCMC Department of Transport said, adding that if the floating dam system is installed with high-capacity pumps at the start and end of Tham Luong Canal, waterborne vessels will not be able to ply the route. … [Read more...] about Quang Trung proposes building floating dams to fight floods in HCMC

Pollock: The CBS correspondent who broadcast the final peace announcement from Panmunjom was Robert Pierpoint, who was still working at the network. I asked him if he had saved the tapes. He said when you're running from foxhole to foxhole you can't be juggling reel-to-reel tape. He thought, however, they shortwaved his reports directly back and said he would look. A few weeks later, we get the tapes. It turns out we can't use them due to the quality. So, we transcribed it and Robert agreed to do them over. … [Read more...] about ‘M*A*S*H’ Finale, 35 Years Later: Untold Stories of One of TV’s Most Important Shows
At its drizzly edges, the storm won't do much more than slick your deck and tousle your hair; push inward, though, and you're in for one hell of a time. Skies darkens, the heavens open, and with a sudden, frantic lunge, the entire ocean drops away, your rain-battered boat flailing ceaselessly atop vast, churning waves. Spray flies, lightning flashes, wood groans and splinters, and all the while you fight to regain control of your ship's furiously spinning wheel. In the lead-up to the Apollo 11 launch, O'Brien persuaded NASA to include a little something extra in the payload. It was a small box, about the size of a thick bar of soap, whose main function was to measure the accumulation of dust on the moon's surface. O'Brien describes it as “a hitchhiking, delightfully minimalist” device. He sketched it on the back of his drinks coaster on a flight from Los Angeles to Houston, and refined the design on a cocktail napkin. Named the Dust Detector Experiment, or DDE, it was perhaps the least impressive component of the Apollo 11 science package; NASA didn't even bother to mention it in press releases. But it worked well enough that the agency included modified versions of the original DDE on all subsequent Apollo flights. Four of them are still up there, and to this day they hold the record for longest continually operating experiments on the moon. … [Read more...] about Moondust Could Cloud Our Lunar Ambitions
