It’s early January, and Sarah McBride is sitting at a desk in her parents’ house in Delaware. A “Sarah McBride for State Senate” yard sign is wedged between a bookshelf and the wall — already a relic from the election she won two months earlier. “It’s been a whirlwind,” she says, leaning forward and taking off her glasses to rub her eyes. And not just because it’s her first time holding public office: When she won her election for state senator of Delaware’s 1st District with an overwhelming 73 percent of the vote, she became the highest-ranking openly trans elected official in U.S. history. Even on a video call, it’s easy to imagine how she captured three-quarters of her constituents in November. At 30 years old, she’s already well into her second decade in politics. She was 13 when she tagged along on a campaign for the first time, for a friend of her dad’s who was running for Delaware insurance commissioner. At 17, she worked on Democrat Jack Markell’s bid to be governor, … [Read more...] about Why Sarah McBride Might Be the Most Inspiring Elected Official in America

In America, women are frontliners of change
They say that “Behind every successful man, there is a strong woman.” They’re wrong. The truth is, behind any successful community — any successful people, or any successful nation — there are countless unheralded and unnamed strong women. All of us have witnessed women standing in the gap and on the front lines, molding and shaping the moments of our lives. As Women’s History Month unfolds, we should pause to consider how women in America have helped to shape our history, individually and as a nation. I think about my grandmothers. Both were sharecroppers who lost their husbands at an early age. They spent their lives picking other people’s cotton and cleaning other people’s houses. Despite their constant struggles, they managed to raise their own children, their grandchildren — and other people’s children. ADVERTISEMENT My grandmothers were frontliners of change. I think about my mother working two jobs for most of my childhood, never letting us see her worry about … [Read more...] about In America, women are frontliners of change
We will prevail: Trump hints at 2024 presidential bid
In his first public speech since leaving office, former United States president Donald Trump has called for Republican Party unity while indicating that he might launch a third presidential bid in 2024 even as he slammed the Biden administration, claiming that the country has gone from 'America First' to 'America Last' in just one month. Photograph: Carlos Barria/Reuters Speaking at the Conservative Political Action Committee in Orlando, Florida on Sunday, the 74-year-old leader, who left the White House on January 20, stopped short of announcing to run for the president in 2024, although he gave enough indications that he is moving in that direction. "We will take back the House. We will win the Senate and then a Republican president would triumph the White House. I wonder, who that will be," he said amidst cheers from his supporters at the annual session of the committee. Trump, however, ruled out forming a new party, arguing that such a move will split votes of … [Read more...] about We will prevail: Trump hints at 2024 presidential bid
Ebola: Obama’s Latest Failure
On Wednesday, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) confirmed a second Dallas healthcare worker who cared for Thomas Eric Duncan, the first Ebola patient to die in the United States, has also been infected. Unfortunately, that person is reported to have traveled by air since the time of exposure. President Obama’s response to the West African Ebola epidemic is wholly ineffective, but that should surprise no one. It’s the way the president has responded to every threat to U.S. security . From missile defense and Iran’s nuclear weapons program to Iraq and Syria, from Russian aggression to the rise of ISIS to securing the southern border and now Ebola, Obama consistently fails to protect the citizens of the United States. His administration is worse than incompetent. It is antagonistic to America’s interests. Once again, Obama’s response puts national security and the well-being of the American people at risk. Failure to keep people infected with the Ebola virus out of the United … [Read more...] about Ebola: Obama’s Latest Failure
Thousands of Central Americans detained for flouting coronavirus rules
GUATEMALA CITY: Thousands of people have been detained across Central America for violating rules put in place by their governments to curb the fast-spreading new coronavirus in a region that has fewer medical resources than developed countries. Central America is home to a large, poor population with no options to work from home, take paid sick leave or observe social distancing rules because they work in the informal economy and live in crowded conditions. Honduran authorities said about 2,250 people have been arrested for violating the curfew imposed since mid-March while Guatemalan authorities said 5,705 people had been detained for leaving their homes without justification. In Panama, more than 5,000 people have been detained in recent weeks for violating curfew rules; another 424 people have been detained for not complying with recent rules that limit men and women leaving the house to alternate days. Meanwhile, in El Salvador, 712 people have been detained for failing … [Read more...] about Thousands of Central Americans detained for flouting coronavirus rules
