Tapping the power of the Vietnamese Identity for global success All of the Asian companies listed on Interbrand's ranking of the Best Global Brands 2012 have Asian names. They include the likes of Samsung, Canon and Toyota. Since a few Vietnamese companies such as Vinamilk, Trung Nguyên, Viettel, have got the ball rolling, it is time for more Vietnamese businesses to be weaned off the need to emulate the West and start to build up unique Vietnamese identities through business ideas. In 2009, global leaders agreed to try not to let the world warm more than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial times. This is sometimes seen as a rule of thumb for keeping on the right side of climate change, within “safe” territory. But that’s not at all how scientists meant it, Professor Camille Parmesan, an expert in biodiversity at the University of Plymouth in the United Kingdom said. Climate risks don’t begin at 2C, she said; it’s more like where they go from high to intolerably high. The planet has already warmed by about 0.8C (1.7 Fahrenheit) since the late-19th century. Some of the world’s most iconic places are also the most vulnerable, and they are already feeling the effects. “We’re already seeing contraction of species in the most sensitive ecosystems, such as those dependent on sea ice or those living on mountain tops,” she said. “We’re also seeing declines in some tropical systems, such as coral reefs, … [Read more...] about The reality of global warming: We’re all frogs in a pot of slowly boiling water
The millions upon millions of gallons of oil hemorrhaging into the Gulf of Mexico every day is a crude reminder of the many ways humans are fouling the planet. As forests are cleared, cities and suburbs paved and expanded, as the air and sea warm and become increasingly polluted with cancer-causing chemicals and garbage, and with species dropping like flies, the planet's health is being challenged in ways that have not occurred in its entire 4.5-billion-year existence. Can Earth survive? The simple answer is a resounding "yes." When humans are gone, as the fossil record suggests will happen eventually, Earth will clean itself up and take on yet another new look, just as it has done many times in the past. In many ways, Earth's existence has been tested far more dramatically in the past than by anything humans have thrown at it. From its origins as a giant lava ball to an epoch that engulfed the entire planet in ice a mile deep, this planet has seen it all. Our planet was even purple … [Read more...] about Can Earth survive?
