China Mobile and Huawei have jointly taken 5G connectivity to literally a new height by bringing the network to the summit of Mount Everest. The companies recently finished building the world’s highest 5G base station at an altitude of 6,500 meters. Together with the launch of the Gigabit optical fibre network at the attitude of 6,500 meters, Huawei says that it will now enable China Mobile to run its dual gigabit network on Mount Everest. Huawei has offered its end-to-end solutions in the construction of China Mobile’s Everest dual gigabit network, where base stations were built in Mount Everest Base Camp at the altitude of 5,300 meters, the Transition Camp at 5,800 meters, and the Forward Camp at 6,500 meters. Huawei claims that its 5G AAU and SPN technologies are applied at these base stations, where network maintenance and optimisation are done by a dozen network specialists who station 24/7 in regions at altitudes of 5,300 meters and above. As soon as we try and put barriers up, effectively, between countries and companies, essentially, to lose what was set out to be. . . I was lucky enough to be here at the beginning of GSM. It was all about generating a global marketplace. Clearly, we've done that, and we shouldn't necessarily try and tear it apart. I think all we're trying to do here is, open interfaces and widen the supply chain again, to the extent that there's fair competition on the marketplace. I'd argue that opening these interfaces would put competition in China as well. Let's look at it the other way around. Let's encourage more companies in China to compete with Huawei and ZTE.
