Thai Air Asia posts losses in Q3 citing huge drop in Chinese tourists
A drop in Chinese tourism, along with higher fuel prices, is being blamed for a loss in the third quarter for Thai Air Asia. Asia Aviation Plc, the operators of the budget carrier, has reported a net loss of 358 million baht for Q3 (third quarter 2018). This compares with a profit of 260 million baht for the same low-season period last year. Chinese visitors are shunning the land of smiles, previously a favourite travel destination. The Government is trying to lure them back by waiving visa-on-arrival fees, along with the nationals from 20 other countries, for two months. The hastily announced program starts on December 1. Full story about the visa-on-arrival fee waiver promotion HERE . Visitor numbers have dropped 8,8% for the year, citing official figures but some tourist areas, like Phuket, Chiang Mai and Pattaya are reporting drops of up to 50% in some sectors of tourism. Reopening of Thailand’s beaches and gyms draws huge crowds
It’s a week into Phase 3 of the easing of Covid-19 restrictions and, following last week’s reopening of Chon Buri’s popular beaches, today it’s Phuket’s turn. It remains to be seen if the inclement weather (during the morning), and the south west monsoon waves, will keep the crowds at bay along the island’s famed west coast beaches. As of this morning there had been little interest in heading back to the island’s main beaches but the weather wasn’t ‘beach weather’ (below). Bang Saen beach in Chonburi received hordes of visitors last weekend, with many Thai and expats having to pick up litter left behind by the crowds. 47 year old Pawit Nitprakit drove from his home in Pathum Thani, about 140 kilometres away, and ended up collecting debris washed ashore by the tide. “I was looking forward to coming to the beach here. When we arrived, I saw trash floating with the waves. When the tide went out, the trash was stuck to the beach, so my family and I helped pick up some trash.” … [Read more...] about Reopening of Thailand’s beaches and gyms draws huge crowds
PM thanks volunteers for graffiti cleanup after huge anti-government protest
Thai PM Prayut Chan-o-cha is thanking pro-government volunteers for their efforts in helping clean up graffiti and paint after last Wednesday’s massive anti-government protest in central Bangkok around the Ratchaprasong intersection. The People’s Movement rally was held that day from 4pm, near the police HQ, with a protest co-leader saying they had acted out of anger after police used water cannons and tear gas to stop the protesters from coming near Parliament, after senators rejected a bill that would help move forward a rewrite of the charter. The day of the protest was also the day that Parliament was voting on 7 versions of the constitutional amendment bill with the charter rewrite being an essential demand of the People’s Movement. Anucha Burapachaisri, a government spokesman, says the prime minister “hoped that demonstrators would exercise their rights within the framework of the law and express their views in a constructive manner. “ However, after the protest, it was … [Read more...] about PM thanks volunteers for graffiti cleanup after huge anti-government protest
Turns out foldable phones are just another huge letdown
Let's face it, mobile phones , even the best ones, just aren't that exciting anymore. They're all way more powerful than we really need, they all have nifty multilens cameras and they all look essentially the same. I really hoped that folding phones would give a much needed shot of adrenaline to the industry. But well over a year after their arrival, they've fizzled out like a damp firework and left me feeling disappointed. I've worked for CNET for a decade, and most of that time I've specifically covered mobile phones. I've seen a lot come and go. I've seen the rise and fall of BlackBerry , I've seen weird phone ideas like the Russian Yotaphone with its E Ink second screen , and I saw the brief trend of curved phones like the LG G4 and Samsung's Galaxy Round . But in recent years it's seemed that genuine innovation has been put aside, with every company clamoring to make what could easily be revisions of the same product. Cut through the chatter Subscribe to … [Read more...] about Turns out foldable phones are just another huge letdown
