AMSTERDAM/ROTTERDAM, Netherlands: In the middle of Rotterdam’s Merwehaven port where ships used to dock, there now stands a floating dairy farm. A three-storey facility spanning 1,800 square metres, the farm is home to 35 cows and 4 newly born calves since opening in May. With a location that’s very different from the normal rolling green hills, its owners hope to showcase food production that takes place closer to where consumers live and that is done in a “climate-adaptive way”. Throwback Thursday: The taste of nostalgia lures snaking queues of A&W fans on opening day
SINGAPORE: The last time 66-year-old Jerry Yeo took a bite out of an A&W coney dog and sipped their famous root beer float was decades ago. So when American fast-food chain A&W reopened its doors in Singapore on Thursday (Apr 11) after a 16-year hiatus, Mr Yeo and his children trooped eagerly down to Jewel Changi Airport. He was greeted by long, snaking lines of diners - but a 90-minute wait was not about to stop him from getting a taste of nostalgia. "I am not a very patient man, but I was willing to wait an hour and a half for my coney dog and original root beer float," he said. Creative Capital: This ex-hotelier keeps Singaporeans nourished with tasty broth
Over the last year, and as a direct result of the pandemic, it feels like the market for homemade broths that can be delivered to your doorstep has exploded. Every few weeks or so, I seem to hear or read about another new local entrant. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not complaining. As someone who loves to cook but hates spending time making stock, these high-quality ready-to-use broths are great. The only issue is figuring out which one is best, in terms of taste, nutrition and budget. Of course, taste is entirely subjective. But for my money, my favourite so far has been the broths from Ao Broth. Started by F&B professional and hotelier Justin Aow and his colleague Elaine Heng, the brand launched middle of last year and offers four varieties of broth: Fish collagen, an unseasoned “kids” version, prawn and lobster broth, and clam and flower crab broth. All are great but the prawn and lobster broth in particular has become something I absolutely love. I was excited to catch up … [Read more...] about Creative Capital: This ex-hotelier keeps Singaporeans nourished with tasty broth
Why in a cheap food paradise, some Singaporeans are still going hungry
*This story has been updated to reflect clarifications from the Ministry of Social And Family Development (MSF) to provide information on some of the profiles who are its current and past SSO clients. SINGAPORE: Rice, hot water and salt to taste. Shanger Pannerchelvam remembers a time when these were the only ingredients his family could afford for dinner. He was only 12 years old. His mother had to stop work as a cleaner at a condominium when artery disease affected her legs. One year later, his father fell into clinical depression and left his fast-food job. Just like that, the family had no breadwinner. Like most adolescent boys, Shanger had a burgeoning appetite - which a small bowl of porridge was unable to satisfy. “I was full of anger as I ate. I’d think to myself, why must I eat this?” he recalled. After dinner, he’d go to sleep. “There was nothing I could do about it. I slept so that I wouldn’t feel any emotions.” That was his only meal of the day. In the morning, … [Read more...] about Why in a cheap food paradise, some Singaporeans are still going hungry
