SINGAPORE: A barrage of banners and posters screaming about bargains is usually a common sight at shopping malls along Orchard Road during the Great Singapore Sale (GSS). But this year, discount signs bearing the familiar GSS acronym were largely missing along the country’s prime shopping belt as the annual sale extravaganza went online for the first time in its 26-year history amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The “eGSS: Shop.Win.Experience”, as it was called, started on Sep 9 and ended on Oct 10. Instead of having shoppers trawling the malls for bargains, deals from nearly 400 home-grown and global brands were made available on an online platform called GoSpree.sg. One could download discount coupons and use them for in-store purchases, play online games to win prizes like gift cards, and watch livestreams on Facebook for exclusive deals. There was also a virtual mall that replicated the look and layout of a real store. Called the Furniture Centrum, shoppers could move around … [Read more...] about Held online amid the COVID-19 pandemic, how did the Great Singapore Sale fare this year?

Rugby: Worcester boss says safety must be priority for Sale match
REUTERS: Worcester Warriors director of rugby Alan Solomons has said player safety must take priority when deciding whether their Premiership Rugby game against Sale Sharks goes ahead. A cluster of positive COVID-19 tests at Sale prompted the Premiership to postpone their final league match against Worcester to Wednesday (Oct 7) from Sunday, while Gloucester's game against Northampton was cancelled due to Saints players self-isolating after facing Sale. The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has launched a probe into how Sale returned 19 positive COVID-19 tests, with 16 of them from the playing group. "When you have 19 ... test positive, that to me represents a cluster, ... it's a huge red flag and a fairly serious situation for any club to find themselves in," Solomons told Planet Rugby. "We're now in the hands of Premiership Rugby, the RFU and Public Health England, all of whom I will rely upon to make the right decision. "They have a duty of care to act in the best interests of … [Read more...] about Rugby: Worcester boss says safety must be priority for Sale match
Boston Dynamics dog robot ‘Spot’ learns new tricks on BP oil rig
REUTERS: Boston Dynamics' dog-like robot 'Spot' is learning new tricks. Working on an oil rig operated by BP Plc nearly 190 miles (305 km) offshore in the Gulf of Mexico, the company is programming Spot to read gauges, look for corrosion, map out the facility and even sniff out methane on its Mad Dog rig. Adam Ballard, BP's facilities technology manager, said tasks performed by Spot will make the work on the rig safer by reducing the number of people. It also will free up personnel to do other work. "Several hours a day, several operators will walk the facility; read gauges; listen for noise that doesn't sound right; look out at the horizon for anomalies, boats that may not be caught on radar; look for sheens," Ballard said. "What we're doing with Spot is really trying to replicate that observation piece," Ballard said, adding that an operator could then review the information from a central location. Spot also has an integrated gas sensor that is programmed to shut the … [Read more...] about Boston Dynamics dog robot ‘Spot’ learns new tricks on BP oil rig
