Rock removal to take two weeks

· September 3, 2013 ·

TAIPEI - The Keelung City Government said yesterday that it will adopt a non-explosive technique to remove a giant, 2,000-ton rock perched high on a hillside. Holes will be drilled into the rock before a "silent static cracking technique" is used to break it into pieces and remove it. The Keelung City Public Work Bureau (PWB) said that equipment will be moved up the hill today to allow work to begin on Wednesday. It will take approximately 12 working days to break the rock and clean up the surrounding area. Torrential rains wreaked havoc on several parts of Taiwan over the weekend. On Saturday in an area near the Bisha Fishing Port in Keelung, landslides demolished a house that was situated at the foot of a hill. In another incident in the same area, a huge boulder rolled down a mountainside and hit a passing car. None of the passengers were injured. The 2,000-ton rock is currently perched on the same Keelung hill. The PWB said it dispatched officials and invited domestic … [Read more...] about Rock removal to take two weeks

Asda tells 3,000 staff their jobs are at risk in huge restructuring amid £6.8bn sale

· February 25, 2021 ·

Asda has launched consultations with 5,000 staff over a major restructuring which could put around 3,000 back office store workers at risk. The grocer said the restructuring has been driven by the "structural shift" towards online grocery shopping during the Covid pandemic. A spokesman said the consultations will affect staff in administrative roles amid a continued slump in cash transactions. The firm said it also plans to close its Dartford and Heston home shopping centres, with around 800 jobs affected, as it looks to shift more picking operations into stores. It added that around 1,100 of its store management roles will be changed to support online grocery operations as more picking takes place in stores. Chief executive Roger Burnley said the decision will "transform" the business. "The pandemic has accelerated change across the retail sector especially the shift towards grocery home shopping and our priority is to serve customers in the way they want to shop with us," … [Read more...] about Asda tells 3,000 staff their jobs are at risk in huge restructuring amid £6.8bn sale

Auditory ascendance

We round up a selection of the latest earphones to find out which is the best. ONKYO IE-HF300 "COMPARED TO THE COMPETITION THE IE-HF300 LOOKS BLAND AND UNINSPIRING." [[{"fid":"141999","view_mode":"default","type":"media","link_text":null,"attributes":{"height":267,"width":410,"border":"0","class":"media-element file-default"}}]] It wouldn't be hyperbole to classify in-ear headphones as the most commonly owned audio accessory around, thanks to how widespread devices like the iPod used to be, and now the all-dancing smartphone. Onkyo's in-ear entry for this shootout is the IE-HF300, featuring a great deal of plastic in a look that can best be described as "industrial". Compared to the competition, the IE-HF300 looks bland and uninspiring. On the other hand, it is quite lightweight, and sports angled ear-tips to improve the fit. The earphones sit comfortably in the ear canal and provide a decent seal. We also liked the large and clearly visible markings denoting the left … [Read more...] about Auditory ascendance

Friends accused me of ‘pandering to pervs’ by posting sexy snaps online but I don’t care because I’m raking it in

· February 26, 2021 ·

A SOCIAL media star who lost friends after starting a career as a model posting racy snaps on Instagram has had the last laugh – because she is now raking in the cash. Ona Artist, 28, has built a huge following on social media since first joining Instagram in 2016. The businesswoman and model now has 3.8 million followers on her account and has just launched a business to coach the next generation. The fame has come at a cost however, as Ona from Seattle, US, reveals disapproving friends cut her out of their lives after she became successful, and claims they said she was "pandering to perverts". “I’ve lost several friends who viewed my ‘sexy’ Instagram as anti-feminist and wrong,” Ona said. “My best friend cut ties with me because she interpreted my sexy approach as degrading to women and my other best friend’s mum, who is a staunch feminist, said I was ‘dragging women backwards’ and ‘pandering to perverts’. “My friend inevitably sided with her mum and we are no … [Read more...] about Friends accused me of ‘pandering to pervs’ by posting sexy snaps online but I don’t care because I’m raking it in

10 tried and tested YouTube lessons

· June 27, 2014 ·

You have seen YouTube tutorials. But do they actually work? SundayLife! tests 10 tricks being taught online. 1. Build your own air-conditioner The weather is growing warmer but turning on the air-conditioning means a heftier power bill. So why not produce your own air-con unit? Get a large styrofoam box, cut a large hole in the lid and fit a fan in the hole so it can blow air into the box. Cut another hole on the side of the box for cold air to escape. Then fill the box with bottles of solid ice, which you can make in your freezer. Switch on the fan and enjoy your cheap "air-conditioning". Does it work: Yes. If you cannot afford air-conditioning, this is a godsend. The air that comes out of the box can go below 20 deg C. Sit next to it and imagine you are in Genting Highlands. If there is enough ice in the box - I used nine 1.5-litre bottles and 12 smaller bottles - your contraption might even be able to work about eight hours, enough to last you through the night. … [Read more...] about 10 tried and tested YouTube lessons
