Bacteria in 2015 GBS outbreak is widespread in Southeast Asia: Researchers

· July 10, 2019 ·

SINGAPORE: A Group B Streptococcus (GBS) bacteria strain that caused an outbreak of fish-borne blood poisoning in 2015 is widespread in Southeast Asia, said researchers at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) who identified the pathogen. The strain, called ST283, had landed more than 160 people in hospital with fever and invasive infections, such as meningitis, after they consumed raw freshwater fish. One of the victims, former technician Tan Whee Boon, lost all his limbs after eating a plate of yusheng, a raw-fish dish. According to past reports, two victims in Singapore died in 2015 from the infection. READ: 'I find new goals every day': Technician who lost limbs after food poisoning DISEASE MORE WIDESPREAD THAN BELIEVED Researchers said on Wednesday that the disease is more widespread than believed, and has been affecting humans and farmed fish across Southeast Asia for decades. “ST283 was found in all invasive Asian collections analysed, from 1995 to 2017. Sneak peek at Luke’s Lobster Singapore: Does it taste the same as in the US?

· September 14, 2020 ·

Not being able to travel means that I miss some of my favourite restaurants around the world with a passion that borders on desperation. And Luke’s Lobster is one of those trusted spots: No trip to New York City or Tokyo, for instance, would be complete without hitting up a Luke’s and pushing my face into a lobster roll or three. In my opinion, Luke’s rolls beat other fancier and arguably more world-famous lobster rolls hands, claws and pants down. The buns are fluffy and buttery; the rolls are perfectly sauced with mayo and lemon butter; and most importantly, they spill over with huge, bouncy chunks of succulent lobster. Yes, size absolutely matters when it comes to buns of seafood. So, of course, I was excited about Luke’s coming to Singapore. But I was also, in the interest of self-preservation, skeptical: Would the lobster be as fresh, sweet and juicy as I remembered it from my travels? Noodle soup with signature crab meatball in Saigon

· February 28, 2021 ·

Located at 4 Phan Boi Chau Street, adjacent to Ben Thanh Market, the food stall was well known as the stomping ground of many foreign visitors, overseas Vietnamese and artists prior to the pandemic. Unlike other versions of crab noodle soup, or bun rieu , the dish here consists of a big chunk of fried tofu, congealed duck blood, a slice of tomato and its huge, signature crab meatball instead of the typically lumpy crab meat with small bite-size pieces on top. It would seem the cook aims to preserve all original flavors pertaining to this dish, allowing guests to enjoy the rich and soft tofu, chewy blood jelly and firm, tasty crab meatball and thin rice vermicelli. The dish is served with a plate of special fish sauce, chili, shrimp paste and tamarind dipping and a plate of fresh split morning glory, mung bean sprouts, thin strips of banana blossom, cilantro and basil leaves. Strategic Somaliland touts its oil and gas as Taiwan office opens

· September 9, 2020 ·

TAIPEI: The strategically located, self-declared African nation of Somaliland touted potential oil, gas and tourism resources for investment as it opened a de facto embassy in Taiwan on Wednesday (Sep 9), a relationship that has angered China and Somalia. Taiwan signed the agreement on establishing representative offices with Somaliland in February, but did not made it public until July. Situated on the Horn of Africa, Somaliland borders Djibouti, where China maintains its first ever overseas military base. Both China, which claims Taiwan as its own, and Somalia have expressed their opposition to Taiwan and Somaliland's forging of ties. Somaliland declared independence in 1991 but is recognised internationally only as an autonomous region of Somalia. Somaliland's chief representative in Taiwan Mohamed Omar Hagi Mohamoud said at the opening of the office in Taipei that they were an independent state establishing ties with Taiwan based on the common values of freedom and … [Read more...] about Strategic Somaliland touts its oil and gas as Taiwan office opens
