The success of big-budget blockbusters in 2018 is more encouraging than it would normally have been, considering how endangered they’ve become. The multi-billion dollar success of certain films signals what the future of the movie industry could resemble - two independent avenues, unaffected by each other. On the one hand, audiences could stay at home and binge on the latest true crime drama, or the newest buzz-worthy rom-com, but for spectacle, everyone will still make the pilgrimage to their local multiplex. If the 2018 box office is any indication, clear inferences can be made about what people like and do not like. With the exception of Bohemian Rhapsody - whose $600 million (and counting) gross - would have surprised even the studio and disgraced director Bryan Singer, every other movie in the top 10 is either a lavish superhero tentpole or a big, effects-heavy actioner. To expect audiences to spend the extra money, and more importantly, to … [Read more...] about From Avengers Infinity War to Mission Impossible Fallout, the top 10 blockbusters of 2018

New York (CNN Business)SpaceX's Mars rocket prototype burst apart during a ground test, a setback for the company as it works to develop a spaceship capable of taking humans and cargo to deep space. Engineers at a SpaceX facility in south Texas were running a test on Wednesday that was meant to check how well the vehicle, nicknamed Starship Mark-1, withstands high pressure when a metal cap on top of the vehicle burst off. Pieces of aluminum were flying, vapor spewed into the area and local SpaceX fans captured footage of the bulkhead landing nearby. SpaceX said in a statement that there were "no injuries, nor is this a serious setback." "The purpose of today's test was to pressurize systems to the max, so the outcome was not completely unexpected," the statement reads. SpaceX representatives often reiterate after something goes wrong during testing that the company doesn't consider such incidences failures. Musk has said that expecting -— even embracing — failures during … [Read more...] about SpaceX prototype blows its top during ground test mishap
A modern-day Carrera RS? We are still several months away from the debut of the next-generation Porsche 911 Turbo S but we’ve already seen quite a few prototypes of the model testing on public roads and race tracks. Today we uncover yet another test car but this time around it’s a rather interesting machine that caught our photographers’ attention in Stuttgart. Gallery: Porsche 911 Turbo S duck tail prototype spy photos 10 Photos Almost everything looks as expected here except for the small fixed rear wing at the back. It’s what many describe as a duck tail spoiler and is something we’ve seen on the so-called Sport Classic series of the German manufacturer. The big difference here is that this car seems to be based on the upcoming 911 Turbo S, whereas the previous 911 Sport Classic used the Carrera S model as a foundation. Just as a reminder, the 911 Turbo S prototypes we’ve seen so far feature an active rear wing, which is … [Read more...] about Porsche 911 Turbo Prototype Spied With Fixed Duck Tail Wing
On Wednesday afternoon, SpaceX loaded super-chilled oxidizer and methane into a prototype version of its Starship vehicle. The exercise, at the company's facilities near Boca Chica Beach in South Texas, represented the first cryogenic fuel loading test of the vehicle. About halfway during the process, however, some sort of failure occurred as the top bulkhead of the vehicle broke apart and went flying away. This was followed by a large, white cloud of smoke and vapor emanating from the interior of the vehicle, which eventually cleared to reveal a dented, but still shiny Starship. This was the same vehicle the company revealed in late September. Further ReadingElon Musk, Man of Steel, reveals his stainless Starship SpaceX sought to play down the accident, noting this was a "max" pressurization test to stress the system. No one was hurt, the company said, and it was not a serious setback in the development of the ambitious vehicle. The company's founder and lead technical designer, Elon … [Read more...] about SpaceX has lost its first Starship prototype—is this a big deal?
We find ourselves in an odd time when automakers are putting out their own camouflaged “spy shots” of prototype cars to drum up pre-release hype. As an editor, I’m fine with this; it’s less freelance money I have to spend buying photos. But it is a bit of a strange practice, and most of the time I don’t really care. Unless it’s a new sports car from Maserati that seems to have very familiar bones. Then we care. We don’t know much about this prototype yet, except that it looks like it’s based on our beloved Alfa Romeo 4C—more for testing and early development purposes than for the platform of the actual car itself, would be my guess. Advertisement Some have speculated it’s going to be the new Alfieri, although this clearly isn’t the We do know that Fiat Chrysler’s brands are going through a pretty big shakeup with no new Fiat cars planned, a downsizing at Alfa Romeo and a pivot to electrification at Maserati. … [Read more...] about I’m Intrigued By This Possibly Alfa 4C-Based Maserati Sports Car Prototype
