UNITED NATIONS: India said nuclear power remains an important option to meet the challenges of increased energy demand, address concerns about climate change and ensure energy supply security. Addressing a UN General Assembly session on 'Report of the International Atomic Energy Agency' Friday, First Secretary in India's Permanent Mission to the UN Sandeep Kumar Bayyapu said India attaches importance to the IAEA's work in different fields of nuclear science and supports its programme on nuclear fusion. "Nuclear power remains an important option to meet the challenges of increased energy demand, address concerns about climate change, redress volatile fossil fuel prices and ensure security of the energy supply," he said. In this context, the IAEA's recent International Ministerial Conference on nuclear power in Abu Dhabi played a significant role in bringing policy makers, scientists, technologists and environmentalists together to examine the prospects of nuclear power. Databases are migrating to the cloudAll things database: Q&A with DataStax's Jonathan EllisThese are the best cloud databases of 2019What made it even more challenging was that it wasn't just a set of databases assigned to one group that was moving; some of those databases were being shared between five groups that were moving at different times. Karen describes the migration as shuffling chess pieces during which she had to make sure that they don't corrupt any data and that it's available to the teams that were still working on it, with the least amount of downtime, if any. … [Read more...] about The challenges of storing scientific data

“People who are worried about tech replacing people haven’t spent time in nursing homes. The people who work with these patients don’t spend quality time with patients—they’re stressed and getting beeped constantly. The truth is that older people are alone all the time, starved of care and interaction,” McGinn said, emphasizing that robotic caregivers don’t replace interactions—they add to them, especially in situations where those interactions aren’t currently taking place. … [Read more...] about Will Care-Bots Cure the Loneliness of Nursing Homes?
Robots capable of social engagement help with loneliness as well as cognitive functioning, but the robot itself doesn’t have to engage directly—it can serve as an intermediary for human communication. Telepresence robots such as MantaroBot, Vgo, and Giraff can be controlled through a computer, smartphone, or tablet, allowing family members or doctors to remotely monitor patients or Skype them, often via a screen where the robot’s “face” would be. If you can’t get to the nursing home to visit grandma, you can use a telepresence robot to hang out with her. A 2016 study found that users had a “consistently positive attitude” about the Giraff robot’s ability to enhance communication and decrease feelings of loneliness. … [Read more...] about Robot Nurses Will Make Shortages Obsolete
