The image is striking: a young woman, alone, standing above the crowd, urging them on with songs of revolution. Taken on Monday night in the centre of Khartoum, as tens of thousands thronged the roads in front of the heavily guarded complex housing the headquarters of the military and the feared intelligence services, the picture of the woman in white with gold circular earrings has become an icon of a protest. Lana Haroun told CNN she had taken the picture. “She was trying to give everyone hope and positive energy and she did it,” she said. “She was representing all Sudanese women and girls and she inspired every woman and girl at the sit-in. She was telling the story of Sudanese women ... she was perfect.” She added: “We have a voice. We can say what we want. We need a better life and to stay in a better place.” She said when she saw the photo on her phone, “I immediately thought: this is my revolution and we are the future.” That the … [Read more...] about ‘Inspiring’ protester becomes symbol of resistance for Sudanese women

Fake taxi driver warning as man attempts to pick up young women in city centre
A "fake taxi driver" trying to pick up women in a city centre has prompted a police warning. A worried student said a man tried to lure her into his car in Derby city centre, claiming to be from a local cab firm. Rosie Baker, 22, had been out with friends when the driver asked if she had called a taxi. He claimed to work for PJ Cars when challenged, and the company's boss has voiced his horror, saying the man had nothing to do with the cab firm. Before Rosie had time to look at his licence plate, he allegedly sped off, Derbyshire Live reports. Rosie, who studies at the University of Derby, claims her friend spotted the same vehicle operating outside the Wetherspoon pub the following night on February 23. She said the driver was asking other young women if they had ordered a taxi - despite not having any company signs indicating it was legitimate. Rosie, who is studying to become a primary school teacher, said: "He asked us if we had ordered a taxi and we said who do you work for. "He … [Read more...] about Fake taxi driver warning as man attempts to pick up young women in city centre
‘Men, please stop calling me beautiful’
That’s the sum printed at the top of the quote from my cosmetic surgeon’s office. My boyfriend is gawping at it, mouth agape. “You’re not actually going to spend this amount of money on your face, are you? You know you could buy a car with that,” he scoffs incredulously. What he doesn’t realise is, I could have bought several cars with the amount of money I’ve already spent on my face. I learnt from an early age, the quest for beauty was one I’d be on for a lifetime, at any cost – an expedition with not so much an end destination, as a mirage, always just beyond the next horizon. The average woman spends 335 hours a year – equivalent to an entire two-week holiday – and over $200,000 over the course of her life, on this quest. If you’re a woman reading this, it’s almost a sure bet you’ve exhausted considerable amounts of your day today, thinking about the way you look. If this all sounds awfully … [Read more...] about ‘Men, please stop calling me beautiful’
‘I hate feminists’: Inside the bloody Montreal massacre which left 14 female students dead
These were some of the last words spoken by college dropout Marc Lepine before he launched a bloody killing spree at École Polytechnique in Montreal in Canada on a chilly December day in 1989. His hate-filled rampage left 14 women dead, and to this day it is still the worst mass shooting in Canada’s history. But despite the gunman’s obvious motive – a loathing of women so intense he was compelled to butcher 14 of them before turning the gun on himself – it has never been officially acknowledged as a specific attack against females. Until now. And while the shooting is still one of the most chilling and bloody the world has ever seen, it has all but been forgotten by most people outside of Canada. MONTREAL MASSACRE The 25-year-old carried out his attack in the afternoon of December 6, exactly 30 years ago this month, by storming a mechanical engineering classroom, gun and knife in hand, and declaring he was “fighting feminism”. He ordered the … [Read more...] about ‘I hate feminists’: Inside the bloody Montreal massacre which left 14 female students dead
